Dear friends,

We are discussing at working at height on Ac roof sheets, we suggest going for GI sheets as the AC sheets are

1. Made up of Assertors which are Hazardous

2. Become brittle

3. Requires maintenance

4. Running cost is high

As we are safety professional we need to suggest the merits and demerits of GI sheets over AC sheets and convince the Management to find a permanent solution.

Hope u all agree with me.

Rgds

Agreed. Still we would require a SOP

to do maintenance work on sloped GI roofs, though the frequency of maintenance

comes down.

Dear Sir,

There are some merits with GI Sheets over AC Sheets - It is OK

Use of Asbestos to be eliminated as per Montreal (?) protocol is also OK

Asbestos is a hazardous material is also OK

What about our Social responsibility to make the Indian Industries to survive in the global market?

It is a big story behind diing Indian Industries and some of the Industries are fighting to survive.

So,It may not be feasible for all Safety officers in all Industries to implement these things at the fast as we advise.

Apart from all this, working over GI sheets is also not that safe.

For heaven sake, please do not allow any person to work over GI sheet roof without lifeline and safety belt.

If there is a steep slope, the person may slip and start sliding and in the absence of an end gutter he may fall down with virtual momentum

In the area where there was a potential for AC roof breakage, the

hazard has been eliminated by replacing with " Galvolume " GI coated

aluminium alloy sheets for around 8000 sqmts. in our factory. This

requires almost no maintenace. Other areas, as we all practice, other

control measures like SWP, competenct person, Interval between work are

practised.

As for the life line, all over the top, criss-cross ropes ( either

rubber insulated wire ropes or manila ropes ) are permanently installed and

the person has to move over the roof with the safety belt tied to that and

drag the same wherever he moves. ( I am trying to locate the photo in my PC

)
