Guest guest
Hi Rhonda. Sorry to hear about your Mom's illness and welcome to the group. My husband has cirrhosis and I've noticed since his drinking stopped back in mid June, he's done much better and seems to have some improvement. Hospice is usually called in when the medical Dr's say there is nothing else they can do. The hospice people will usually come in, care for the patient, but they take no preventative measures. Their main objective is to make the patient comfortable in any end stage disease. Sorry I can't be of anymore help, but that's the extent of my knowledge with Hospice. How long your Mom really has depends a lot on how much damage is done to the liver, and her MELD score, and her getting so sick after resuming her drinking will bring these symptoms on that you've listed. It's also normal for them to appear to get better after stopping drinking. Guest guest
Thank You. I have no info on her Meld score she has not seen a Dr in over 3yrs. Her choice. So I really have no idea what the damage is. I am just going by what hospice said when they came in.She had been drinking heavy for the last 3yrs. I do know the Dr told her in 99 if she drink again it would kill her I don't know if we have a week or 5yrs. Just trying to keep her happy and comfortable. ________________________________ To: livercirrhosissupport Sent: Monday, December 5, 2011 4:49 PM Subject: Re: Not sure what is next!  Hi Rhonda. Guest guest
Rhonda, Who got hospice involved in your Mom's care? Normally they make you sign papers that state what their intentions are. Sadly enough, there is no way to know how long anyone can survive with Cirrhosis. > Thank You. I have no info on her Meld score she has not seen a Dr in over > 3yrs. Guest guest
Oh Rhonda - what a position to be in!! I am certainly not a Dr.; but, everything that you have described does not bode well for her. An old aunt of my husband's was at the ripe old age of 97 recently. Well, she decided that she'd had enough and refused to eat. Everyone thought it would be quick, so arrangements were made. When you count in all the relations that she had, it was bound to take awhile to get some here. Fortunately, she did pass and they carried on with the service. My parents have been firm believers in arranging there own end time. Thus, when I realized in Sept that I am going terminal, my first goal was to make arrangements. However, at the moment, I just don't have the money. However, my son will have several thousands from my life insurance, so I doubt it's going to be hard for him to have a very cheap service. He knows very well what I want, plus there is the will, living will and power of attorney. I'm not a showing person living, so I certainly don't want anything flashy. You see, my husband passed away on Christmas Eve last year and certainly did not leave me an easy job. As usual, he left it up to me and that meant dealing with his nasty kids and the sisters. They make dysfunction look like a picnic in the park. Anyway, we had been separated for the previous 6 months, so I gave his kids permission to plan a service. What a huge mistake that was!!! Then, try settling an estate, even if it isn't enough to hire lawyers etc. He left no will. So, I learned from that and have already signed everything that I own over to my son and just need to go to the lawyer, who has fixed up my attempt at a will etc. She is the same lawyer that I had to get for the husbands none-estate. So she knows that if his children thought there was anything to get from me, they might do it just for spite. I hope that everything works out and isn't complicated. ________________________________  Hello to all, My name is Rhonda, My mom was diagnosed in 1999 with cirrhosis. she quit drinking for 8yrs started back. Guest guest
I know what you are saying. I am so confused and everything in my life is on hold. She seems to be doing better except her urine is still brown and she is having alot of back pain. she knows what she has done to herself. I am the one who called hospice, I was trying to get a Dr here at my house and pay out of pocket, she refused to go to the Dr and when I called EMS here she refused to go then. Hospice came out and talked with her, I do know they sent for her records in Florida. so I am hoping that will tell me something. ________________________________ To: " livercirrhosissupport " <livercirrhosissupport > Sent: Wednesday, December 7, 2011 1:24 AM Subject: Re: Not sure what is next!  rhonda, i have esld from alcohol was diagnosed in 2008 i have not had a drank since.my dr's told me it would be like putting gas on a fire.my meld go from 16 to 11 and then a 20 it changes all the time it keeps me confused.i really sorry to hear about your mom.but it sounds like she for some reason put the gas on the fire.but i also thought the dr would have to place her with hospice.it sounds like since she didn't follow dr's advise thats where they think she should be.and that is not right for them to just give up without doing lab work to see what is going on.good luck. bev,tx ________________________________ To: livercirrhosissupport Sent: Tuesday, December 6, 2011 9:42 AM Subject: Re: Not sure what is next!  Rhonda, Who got hospice involved in your Mom's care? Guest guest
Rhonda You mentioned that mom did manage to quit drinking for a few years? Being diagnosed of such high amount of cirrhosius, should scare the beegeezus out of anyone. But, I also understand addiction and especially to alcohol. Mom had to have known that reverting back to drinking, would hasten her journey to death.  What she may not understand and it seems that she doesn't want to understand anymore, is that dying of liver disease can be really painful. I wonder if she just wants to go soon?? Unfortunately, alcohol is a teaser as well. Even the very worst cases, can just live on and on. Is it possible to put her into hospice care? Hang in - Gloria ________________________________  I know what you are saying. I am so confused and everything in my life is on hold.
