Full time police and career firefighters can be in the Police and Fire Retirement System if the voters in their municipality have approved a referendum to do so; only certain fire alarm dispatchers can qualify to be in PFRS. The vast majority of public employees must be in the Public Employees Retirement System and there are others including one for Teachers. Members of the PFRS for years have been allowed to retire after 25 years service at 60% average of their last 3 years base pay and 70% at 30 years with recent legislation allowing retirement after 20 years at 50% but those choosing that option don't qualify for medical benefits. The member and the employer both have to contribute a much higher rate than the other pension systems which is why the referendum is required. Those in the PERS can retire after 30 years service at age 55 or older and receive 50% average of their last 3 years base pay. Those with 30 years service below age 55 can retire but will lose a percentage for each year younger. Members with less than 30 years service can also retire at a reduced rate.
