This is the earliest I can recall that I may be getting them. In the past I had " flu shot sessions " on Saturday mornings and some evenings by early or mid October. I think last year I was as early as third week of September. Now I'm wondering if I should start in the next 2-4 wks if some shots are arriving. CDC site is making a statement that folks should get shots as soon as available in communities. Do folks have a handle on the recommendation for start date to give the flu shots? I ate about 75 doses last year, due to lack of demand, even though we start in late Aug with our sports pe, and WCC, and went well into late Feb. Just not much flu last year, and not much demand, (we ran out year before, Mexican craziness that year I think). I am in no hurry, just an expense I have to put out, and wait to get back. Will start early Sept, or end of Aug. Normally we always do it around Halloween just because it is cool to stick people with needles around the “trick or treat†time. This year, our clinic is September 21. I send out a newsletter to let our patients know and usually we get about 100 people show up. I have consistently given between 300-350 flu shots a year and given the Medicare reimbursement, it adds nicely to my bottom line. If you give it much earlier you have the effectiveness waning at the time you may want it at the end of the flu season in the spring. I start shots in October only if they beg Run a 1/2 day of a clinic in November when I allow my virtual MA to actually set foot in here, then also do them at visits ongoing I buy 80 shots a yr Never change The practice grows and grows but I buy 80 They go to Walmart etc and if I had bad demand I can get more but I never end up with mor e than 2 or 3 left overs. It used to say that immunity wanes with time. Now, they say that it is good all year and we are far better immunizing early than not immunizing at all (so it really can be given at any time). In terms of just practice management, I can no longer wait until the end of October because Walgreens and Costco will have already immunized all my patients. With all that said, I will not be immunizing myself or my nurse until around Thanksgiving. And especially here where we seemed to get hit with our worst either before Winter Holiday Break or even as late as Jan or Feb, we used to delay as much as the patients would cooperate with.... Today, we do not even bother as the Flu Clinics are everywhere and they get a better break on the quantity and we can no longer predict demand. I will not eat this expense while NYS allows others to steal a chance at a real PCP visit for friends in Corporate Owned pharmacies. The fall is a great chance to touch base with your patients just before the winter garbage starts flying around with the kids back at school. To have allowed this to happen and to take both business and patient centered contact and care away from primary care is just another example of not allowing medicine to steer the ship...
