I suspect this refers (clumsily) to maintenance of sufficiently thick tear

film between ocular surface and inner mucosa of the upper lid which keeps

the friction from the upper lid to a minimum (and protects the cornea

somewhat). I am not aware of what the correct American English usage is, but

" thickness of the tear film " seems more appropriate than distance.
