Guest guest
Hubby had his fluid drawn last Monday and they took off 7.4 liters of fluid. I wasn't surprised about the amount, but was curious why they gave him Albumin, afterward. Apparently Methodist Hospital does that if they have to drain more than 4 liters of fluid. It helps the kidney's, I think is what his Dr said. On Tuesday, the following day, they'd moved hubbys appt up with the Hepatology Dr, so we were there first thing in the a/m at 8. They told us that yes he was being referred for a transplant, and gave us the paperwork and told us that the pre-evaluation lady would call us and then we'd make appts for the evaluation process once the insurance was verified that they would pay for it. I remembered to ask about his MELD score which she said was a 16. I guess he's at the point where that is the criteria for being evaluated? Does anybody know anything about the MELD score they could share? Thanks, Sandy
Guest guest
Dear Sandy. Meld score is a combination of blood work results, and the formula looks like this; MELD = 3.78[Ln serum bilirubin (mg/dL)] + 11.2[Ln INR] + 9.57[Ln serum creatinine (mg/dL)] + 6.43 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_for_End-Stage_Liver_Disease You can figure out the MELD at any time by putting BiliT and CREAT and INR in to this calculator http://www.mayoclinic.org/meld/mayomodel6.html Serum albumin is the most abundant blood plasma protein and is produced in the liver and forms a large proportion of all plasma protein. Albumen is the key to the regulation of the osmotic pressure of blood. When the albumen is too low, and portal hypertension is present, the cells can leak water(by osmosis) in to spaces in which it does not belong, mostly the belly and feet and legs. This is called " third spacing " . They will often give albumen to help slow the refilling of of the third spaces. Low albumen is a symptom of liver disease. This description is a very very simplistic way of expaining it. I hope this helps, Love, Bobby Aragon  ________________________________ To: livercirrhosissupport <livercirrhosissupport > Sent: Monday, September 26, 2011 12:03 AM Subject: What a week!  Hubby had his fluid drawn last Monday and they took off 7.4 liters of fluid.
