Guest guest
My hepatologist recommends for ME a diet with restricted sodium, which is not really even restricted. I am supposed to eat less than 2,000 mg per day. This is the same as the government recommendations. Almost everyone eats way way too much salt. Almost every dish on the menu at the Macaroni grill is in the 5 to 6 thousand MG range. The problem as told to me is that kidneys like salt, and salt likes water, and you will retain water, and complicate ascites and edema which is classic side effects of cirrhosis. He also says a heart healthy diet is the best, eating fresh vegetables, fruit, and grains, avoiding fat, salt and sugar. In practice I tend to avoid meat just because of it's effects on my brain function. but he has warned me to not go overboard, because the ;liver needs protein in order to repair itself. I hope this helps, but you should try to take Fred to a real hepatologist if only once. Guest guest
Bobby, you said: " I tend to avoid meat just because of it's effects on my brain function. but he has warned me to not go overboard, because the ;liver needs protein in order to repair itself. I hope this helps, but you should try to take Fred to a real hepatologist if only once. " Fred's wife might get jealous! My husband was put on a low protein, Diabetic diet(2 oz of protein per meal) his two weeks in the rehab. Near his time for discharge, the dietician met with me and said that was far to low, the doctor said he was going to raise his protein to double that, to see if he could tolerate it well. They never did, despite my many complaints they did not. The doctor would tell me he would have to verify every thing I pointed out they did wrong, including that. During his 11 days in the hospital he was on a Heart Healthy diet, not a Diabetic diet, despite their giving him insulin daily on a sliding scale depending on his blood sugar readings. He was not diabetic before, and a Hemoglobin test showed he was never diabetic, but he was close. If it is not too sensitive a subject, could you or other members describe what symptoms you experienced after suddenly stopping alcohol comsumption? I am thinking his symptoms could be more from that, and not so much from high ammonia levels?? A friend described her friend as having similar symptoms, that took months to clear. I did read that your brain has to relearn to function normally again, without the alcohol it was used to. The swelling in his stomach and ankles has all but disappeared, but his slowness and slow speaking has not. He is not confused or disoriented, he is just in a slow mode. Guest guest
Bobby I always have thought that the bests diets anyone should use, is either heart healthy or for diabetics. However, I don't follow it either. I think it was my mother the other day, saying something about my Dad not eating red meat any longer. Have to get that protein in there somehow. So, I pointed out that Peanut Butter would do it pretty good. It or cheese slice were the only sandwiches he'd take to school. Also, I don't think that he actually ate anyred meat until he hit his teens. Chicken or fish, was it. Well he grew up to be a healthy man who is still trying so hard to have a chest! LOL  My hepatologist recommends for ME a diet with restricted sodium, which is not really even restricted.
