I've posted about variations of this message on 911-Talk a

few times, the last time on Fri, Feb 23. I cut my text

from there and will repost it here, just this one time.

You will see my opinion as you read. What you choose to do

is your choice but please make it an informed choice rather

than a purely emotional reaction.

The 911-Talk list last received this message, with only slight

differences, on Feb 4, 2001.  Since the message is still

circulating, I'll repeat my prior comments.

I support a boycott of any organization who actively calls

for the release or retrial of the murderer, Mumia Abu-Jamal.

I do not support the continued circulation of this and

similar e-mails that contain a mixture of true information,

misinformation, and outright lies.  Law enforcement and

other public safety personnel lose credibility when we

continue to circulate false or half-true information.

The " recent " FOP conference was the 54th Biennial Conference

of the Grand Lodge in Mobile, Alabama, in August 1999.  See:

The FOP did resolve " to inform our members and the rest of the

nation about the Danny Faulkner story. The members attending

the conference were equally adamant that we also inform them

of those persons and corporations that are attempting to keep

his killer from receiving the justice he deserves. "   However,

the FOP has NOT " announced the boycotting of the following:

Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Products... " as is stated in the

message.  That statement is simply false.

The FOP did post a complete list of supporters of Mumia

In the list of " supporters of Mumia Abu-Jamal " is--

Cohen, Ben - Ben & Jerry's (New York Times, 8/9/95)

Ben Cohen, a co-founder of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, was listed

in a 1995 advertisement in the NY Times as having signed a

petition calling for a retrial.  Mr. Cohen's statement and Ben

& Jerry's corporate position are at:

Ben & Jerry's states that they have never supported Mumia

Abu-Jamal and they were never " donors to a defense fund for

the killer " as stated in the message.  Even Mr. Cohen, who

admits to signing a petition calling for a  retrial, said

that he was not and has never been a 'donor.'

Many law enforcement officers and some Internet sites,

such as http://www.officer.com/faulkner/boycott.htm have kept

false information circulating because this is such an emotional

issue.  Members of the law enforcement community do a disservice

to themselves and those they serve when unsubstantiated informa-

tion is passed along as fact when, in fact, it is partly true

but largely wrong, false, a lie, etc.  We're stuck with 'the

truth, whole truth, nothing but...'

Faulkner pages.  There is enough factual information there

without making ice cream and salad dressing scape goats in

our efforts to ensure that a convicted murderer and his

victim receive justice.

and buy a t-shirt.  Wear it.  Don't buy CDs by artists who

performed at fundraising events to support the murderer.

Tell teenagers wearing 'Rage Against the Machine' t-shirts

how their band supports a murder (and don't be surprised

when they say, " Oh, yeah?  Cool, dude. "   No, you can't

wring their necks.  Murdering them won't help.  Our

objective is to see that Mumia Abu-Jamal spends the

rest of his life incarcerated for a brutal murder of a

police officer.).

Please pass only complete and accurate information along,

whether to friends, enemies, relatives, strangers, or

e-mail lists...

Please don't.  It's not true.  How will you answer if the

grocer produces the factual information that Ben & Jerry's

has been putting out since 1998?  The factual information

about the Ben & 's Foundation and what they actually do

support, a variety of charities and not a single murderer?

Before sending anything else on, please visit the FOP and

Ben & 's web sites.  Read what's there.  Then decide

for yourself, based on fact and not a mixture of fact,

half-truths and outright lies intended to stir your

emotions that is circulated by e-mail.

Yes.  Check the facts.  Support every legitimate effort to

ensure justice for the family of Police Officer

Faulkner.  But decide for yourself who you boycott.  And

know why.
