Hi Heidi, I went to a sleep disorder clinic several years ago and found it was very helpful for me. I had insomnia for 6 months straight and thought I might go crazy. I did two overnight studies and met with two docs. If you do an overnight, they will hook you up with a lot of sensors and might even have a video camera on in the room. Despite having electrodes glued to your head, you'll find that you'll most likely be able to sleep in your " normal " fashion. I didn't end up having restless leg syndrome or apnea, so I didn't get a machine or meds, but what I got was an excellent lesson in what they call " sleep hygiene " . It's a funny phrase that does not describe how to bathe before bed or anything; rather, it is about setting your sleep hours properly, not napping if you have insomnia, creating the right setting to sleep in etc. I do have the funny brain waves typical of people with FM (delta waves with alpha intrusions) and I probably won't ever get really restful sleep, but I can now control my sleep and avoid the type of horrible insomina I had in the past. Sleep is made difficult when one as chronic pain. The sleep dis- order clinic will hopefully take this into account. My docs said that sometimes the pain wins out (and you allow yourself to have bad sleeping habits like staying in bed for long periods) and other times, you have to push yourself in order to correct your sleep even though your sore body protests. It's a balan- cing act, for sure. Best of luck at the clinic. Donimo
