Guest guest
Hello << I am currently preparing a training program for our comm center on using TDD's, ASL, recognizing language differences and deciphering non-standard English so that emergency communication is understood, modifying our language to be better understood by the deaf community, and understanding the hearing/speech impaired community. >> This is kinda fortutious -- I just finished reading an article on sign language and associated issues in my Council on Exceptional Children journal. I have their phone numbers right here: , fax . Both they and your local State Department of Rehabilitation will have information and people to contact regarding training in these areas. Also, each state has a " Governor's Committee on Employment of Persons With Disabilities " , an offshoot of the president's committee by the same name and they are also going to have a list of resources and people for you. They take a LOT of TDD calls then call the business or agency requested. I have taken several of them in my career. You speak to a person that is talking (typing) to the requestor. They relay the call by voice to us. Works great. Guest guest
We've had a TDD for over 15 years, long before we ever thought we'd have a 911 terminal that would require it. The first was donated by the local Optimist Club who also gave them to the other two PD's that serve their club's area. Of course, now I'm probably going to jinx myself but so far the only call that I've ever received requiring the use of TDD was an inquiry about overnight parking restrictions from someone who was just hard of hearing. In fact, after typing back and forth for 5 minutes the caller asked " do you mind if I hang up and try using the regular phone? " There was absolutely no problem that way. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying it's not needed just the facts of its usage on my shifts which probably number about 4000 while we've had one.
