Guest guest
I was sent to a nursing home before my transplant - between getting an infection from an IV and them NOT giving me my lactulose if my daughter and I wouldn't have checked myself out of there I would have died in there.I was originally in the hospital for infection due to acites and the hospital shipped me to a nursing home saying insurance ( mediacaid & medicare ) wouldn't pay. I never heard anything from the hospital.family doctor or the nursing home after I checked myself out.No bills,no follow up - nothing. I think they knew they were totally in the wrong.I was in the nursing home only a few days and when I left I looked like death warmed over.I was starting to go whacky because of the lack of lactulose.I got a prescription for antibiotics and went home and took care of my infection myself and did OK after that. That's been 2 years ago and I have not seen my family doctor since.Luckily I have had my transplant doctors and specialists to rely on. > > Hi everyone! > > Just to let you know that I fell on June 11 and broke my left hip. Guest guest
Hi Tony: Jackie here. My husband was also sent to a nursing home to wait for a new liver. He spent a total of 5 days in there. When he got his first call for a liver I checked him out of there (which I was planning to do anyway). They had no clue how to handle a transplant patient. I had to sit down with the nurses the first night and go over all his meds, explaining what they were, and what they were for. I also told them that if they got a call from the transplant center, even if it was in the middle of the night, that they were not to attempt to transport him to the center. They were to call me and have him ready at the door, and I would take him there myself. I must say, they were very excited about history being made and treated us like they had a celebrity on their hands. They were wonderful people but had no clue what had to be done. The 2nd day he was there he called me in the middle of the night and wanted me to come and stay with him. Sure enough, his ammonia was up again. I explained to them that they needed to give him an extra dose of lactulose. They were confused because his chart said lactulose 3 times a day and they had already given him 2 doses. I told them that lactulose is an adjustable dose, kind of like insulin for a diabetic. They also wanted to give him something to keep him calm, and I told them ABSOLUTELY NOT!! They were not to give him ANYTHING that was not listed on his chart without first checking with the transplant center. He was #2 on the list in our region and there was no way I was going to let anything happen that would compromise his chances of getting a new liver. Two weeks later he did get his new liver and he is doing well now. Hope you are doing well with your new liver too. Jackie To: livercirrhosissupport Sent: Wednesday, August 17, 2011 8:09 AM Subject: Re: Update on me  I was sent to a nursing home before my transplant - between getting an infection from an IV and them NOT giving me my lactulose if my daughter and I wouldn't have checked myself out of there I would have died in there.I was originally in the hospital for infection due to acites and the hospital shipped me to a nursing home saying insurance ( mediacaid & medicare ) wouldn't pay. Guest guest
Hey Lyncia! Stay positive! Having 3/4 liter more doesn't mean more fluid is building. This could just mean there was more fluid in a certain area. From what I know from my past experience with my wife is they look for areas with the most fluid and drain from there. And they drain from the easiest accessible area. But you need to ask the doc for sure. He would only know if the albumin levels in your blood were dropping which would cause the rise in fluid. You're in my prayers girl! Stay positive though, K? Guest guest
Lyncia - So sorry to hear about your hip, and from what you are saying about the nursing home/rehab, similar to what I experienced after my bypass. They changed my medicines without telling me and when I asked what they were giving me they didn't remember/know. I hope the food is better than the slop served at the home I was in. I lived on watermelon and lettuce salad after I found out I could go down to the cafeteria. Besides the lousy food, my tastes buds were completely changed for months after the surgery. I hadn't eaten pepper for years, and that seemed to be the only seasoning they used.. Work hard, and if they don't give you enough time, work on your own. Best to you, keep us updated. Will put you on our prayer chain. jan > Hi everyone! > > Just to let you know that I fell on June 11 and broke my left hip. I had > surgery and went to a nursing home...oh...rehab.
