Guest guest
My daughter (a recent law school graduate, who 'knows everything') emailed me (the mother who hasn't known ANYTHING for many years!) with the following: " really random question but if anyone would know, you would -- someone said they read in some fitness magazine that if you eat 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon a day that it helps burn hundreds of calories a day... " I haven't worked in a clinical setting in about 30 years, and although I think I do know the answer, could someone guide me to 'concrete' evidence that cinnamon does not 'help burn hundreds of calories a day.'? Guest guest
What I do know, from a presentation I attended on Management of Diabetes, is that Cinnamon (1,3, or 6 grams daily) reduced FBS's 18-40% after 40 days, lowered triglycerides 23-30%, lowered LDL 7-27%, lowered total cholesterol 16-26%, and enhanced insulin's uptake into cells. (Diabetes Care: 26;3215-3218, 2003). Guest guest
What I wonder is...did the folks also make changes in their behaviors in addition to taking the cinnamon? ________________________________ From: rd-usa on behalf of Margarete Carneiro Sent: Sun 10/7/2007 5:04 PM To: rd-usa Subject: Re: Cinnamon and weight loss What I do know, from a presentation I attended on Management of Diabetes, is that Cinnamon (1,3, or 6 grams daily) reduced FBS's 18-40% after 40 days, lowered triglycerides 23-30%, lowered LDL 7-27%, lowered total cholesterol 16-26%, and enhanced insulin's uptake into cells. Guest guest
Good morning!! In regards to the cinnamon question, cinnamon has been recommended by the health food industry for glucose control. While it MAY lower the glucoses in some studies, others say that cinnamon has no effect. In addition, taking cinnamon with oral hypoglycemics, may cause glucose to go below normal, if in fact cinnamon has a glucose lowering effect. In regards to weight loss, cinnamon has absolutely no effect on weight. It is just another " magic pill " . Check out naturaldatabase.com for additional information. One fourth teaspoon of cinnamon per day WILL NOT burn hundreds of calories per day! Janet Mohrman MS RD LDN Normal Il

Guest guest
Lois, I think the fitness magazine just ran off with the information in a different way to get attention. 1/4 tsp. cinnamon has been shown to keep blood sugars in better control, which would also help with weight control, but not by the glorified hundreds of calories/day. Hyperinsulinemia is pretty common these days, due to the types of sugars used in foods and beverages, and due to inadequate fiber intake, so that is why calories are stored and/or not burned efficiently. For your " recently graduated lawyer " (I've got one in law school and know exactly what you mean!) go to this site for some quick research pieces    http://www.vitasearch.com - and type in the word cinnamon. You can do some of the reading and send her your response. Hope this helps. Jacqui  Jacquelyn A. Guest guest
I had also heard that the cinnamon has to be a specific brand of cinnamon.
