Sherry, I'm confident that as they look into this, they are doing so from an

objective point of view ... protection of the consumer benefits vs. harm ...

and are evaluating the claims of the harm in order to accurately weigh it.

I respect your views against them, but feel you've taken issue with our

chemists and cannot respect their positions for the use of the preservatives.

This

is not an objective position about the subject that provides us with

education, it's posturing debate.

There is no such thing as a one-sided coin. My mother is on blood thinners

due to the bloodclots her body throws constantly, and cannot indulge in

broccoli - one of her favorite all-natural veggies. Benefit vs. harm must be

weighed

in all things ... meds, home remedies ... even the amounts of certain

vitamins and minerals.

I'm thankful they are answering at all ... ad nauseum ... to continue the

education that this list is set up to do ... especially during this exceedingly

hectic season! I for one have not only been busy with my soaps, but have been

jobhunting full time, temping on a day-to-day basis almost full time for over

a month, have had my 16-year old son go through cardiology testing and

evaluation for pectus excavatum (concave sternum), PVCs at rest, and chest pain,

and

my 11-year old is now sick with that flu I had last month and didn't get to

rest through. If you have conclusive, objective facts or alternatives, by all

means we want to hear them ... but I really have no time for debates or " them

vs. us " position statements.

My bar soap gets moisture on it but I do not add a preservative to

soap.

And as far as adding a preservative to the chap stick, many people

can not use it because it causes blisters to their lips due to the

preservative used.

I am sure you are aware of the fact that the FDA is looking into the

problems caused by preservatives in cosmetic and soap products and

that anit-bacterial products are not that effective.

Synthetic preservatives is, in fact, a NEW areana and the effects

over long term use have not been well documented as yet. I won't bore

you all with pages of data, it is available on the internet.

Our bodies have many bacteria, especially in the mouth and intestinal

tract, but that does not mean they should be removed, they are there

for the purpose of destroying the so-called " bad " bacteria that

enters our body daily. Without this natural bacteria in our bodies we

would surcome to virus and disease and die.

I do not want to debate, nor will I debate, this with you, but only

to state another point of view, about adding synthetic preservatives,

when it is not entirely necessary, because there are SO many people

allergic to synthetic preservatives, and sometimes, they cause a lot

more problems than they prevent. Case in point: lipbalms, anti-

bacterial liquid soap.

I for one, would like to hear from others [the 1000 +] members on

this list who seldome or never post, rather than just our resident

chemist who seems to be the only one answering questions on this

group. I am sure there are others who have ideas and references to

share with this group.

Hi Sherry, I am one of the newbies! Though I have been " studying "

for almost 2 years - we still have not launched our body products (I

run a small medium candle manufacturing company).

The thing is: I do a lot of my learning on the internet, but it is

difficult to discern what is Truth. I have a very scientific mind

(not much " touchy-feely " here), so I when folks like Labrat and

others back up their statements with scientific research (research

that is replicated in various places) and from sources that I would

trust even independently of their own opinion, I discover from whom

I can really *learn* on this board. The list is surprisingly short

(4 names). I read every single post (and all the archived posts) in

order to learn from everyone (and everybody *does* teach me), but

again, I only truly trust anything backed by research (again, many

of Labrats posts, as an example). This is not " picking " people

to " follow " , please do not misunderstand...

In any case, as a newbie I am not at all qualified to speak to the

issue of preservation. The best I can do is to ask questions - and

hopefully some of them will spur thought, exploration, and

discussion. Your post is very interesting, I would be very

interested if you could lead me to more sources on this? I am the

type of person who tries not to take too much medication, so I would

love to use less preservative. But until I have more reliable

information I have to use preservative systems that are effective

and as safe as possible.

I hope that in a few years I can help to teach others as much as I

currently learn on the board...

Kind regards,

Barbie
