What I suspect happened is probably his fault. When I paid for the

book, I was e-mailed a link where I could go get the book again if I

had any problems. This link did not require a password. I'm not

sure if the link expired or not either.

Maybe someone on another list posted this link and you were able to

download the books for free from the website that is distributing

them. They should not have shared this link.

That could be it. Either way when I spoke to Tom I let him know

exactly how I had accessed the books. This was last week, and he

hasn't corrected the problem.. so.... I dont know.... I guess I

learned from this mistake.

It's not necessarily his " problem. " The reason I raised the issue is

because I have written and sold eBooks myself. As an IT Director, I

am very familiar with the security issues surrounding the

publication and distribution of eBooks. While there are many systems

out there that are highly secure, they are not necessarily cost

effective - in other words, it may cost so much for a solution to

effectively protect the links to your books, that it is more

worthwhile to put your faith in the integrity of those purchasing

them.

I wrote some custom programs when I had Peak Physiques that would

hide the URL and then allow them to be unlocked and downloaded with

a password. Some people simply put the books out there in an

unprotected link, but don't publish the link unless you have made a

purchase or received a password.

What most likely happened is that somewhere along the line, a

dishonest person looking to impress themselves upon others by

sharing this information published the links to the books. This

resulted in them being shared and distributed to others, so on and

so forth. Many authors consider illegal distributorship to be " cost

of doing business " on the web. I know that with my materials, I

would put my web page and e-mail on every page so that if the works

were pirated, it would at least be free advertising for the other

services that I provided on the site.

It is okay to share information and I don't think anyone is upset

with anyone else for coaching and inspiring others. It is just a

simple mistake and probably resulted in some good, because now you

know that those types of copyrighted materials exist and so it is

important to contact the authors and receive permission before

publication. Some people enjoy seeing their works posted at other

sites (it is a form of viral or network marketing) where others

depend on their direct stream of revenue and therefore would prefer

to keep the sources to the books at their site and not distributed

elsewhere. It doesn't make someone good or bad or right or wrong,

it's just different models to do business!

Take care,

Likness
