Guest guest
I posted several weeks ago about starting synthroid to treat my depression that has in the past been untreatable. I started on 25mcg and have seen no improvement in my symtoms in the last eight weeks. I now have my lab results and would like to share them here. My doctor tells me my thyroid is in the normal range now, so the treatment just didn't work. This is very disappointing to me because I've tried over the past 13 year to find relief from my growing fatigue and depression. I've tried every available drug and treatment and none has worked. I've had sleep apnea treated and that didn't help, tried testosterone without success. The only thing I haven't tried is ECT (electro convulsive therepy), but that one scares me a little too much. So, here are my labs, I'd really like to know if I could still have a thyroid problem that needs to be treated and/or should I pursue a thyroid expert? Prior to treatment with synthroid, my TSH was 2.91 and that's all I know otherwise. After 8 weeks: TSH : 1.67 Uiu/ML range (.44-4.37) T4 Free : 1.0 ng/dl range (.4-1.4) T4 Total : 9.5 mcg/dl range (5.8-11.8) T3 Uptake : 40% range (31-47) T3 Reverse : .21 ng/mL range (.19-.46) Thyroid peroxidases ab <2 IU/mL (negative) I requested the doctor to run Free and total T3 , but he did not. I talked him into letting me try some synthethic T3 25mcg for a while, but he didn't think there was any use, but understands I need some hope for improvement. Any help, opinions, would be appreciated. thanks, scott
Guest guest
Hello, , Depression does not respond to T4, but T3 may help. I was on Synthroid for eight years and depression never got any better even with antidepressant medications. When I started on Armour, the depression was completely gone in less than a month. You need the T3, not just T4, to accomplish this. The " range " is an okay tool if, in fact, you are feeling better. If not, then ask him to switch you to Armour and see what happens. If he does not know how to make the conversion between the two, have him call the pharmacist. The pharmacist will definitely know how to do that. Guest guest
, First thing------if you are still feeling cruddy, when the docs say you are "normal" then you are not, especially when your TSH still is somewhat high. You do need those Free T3 and Free T4 tests to be done! The TSH alone is not worth much as a tool after starting treatment. Also, T3 is the hormone that works with the emotions, and that is the thyroid hormone that Psychiatrists have used to alleviate depression. I just wrote an article on depression and Thyroid disease, and also in the most recent issues of Shomon's About Thyroid, there is a discussion and interview on depression and Thyroid Disease.I emphasisze----Do not give up hope! The T3 is the hormone that helps with depression, especially the type that is resistant to other therapy. This is what happened in my case. I was having very bad depression episodes. When I started Natural Thyroid,(which contains T4,T3,T2,T1,and calcitonin---- all of which is in the healthy thyroid)I had finally found something that relieves most of my depression without all the side effects of anti-depressants.The T3 seems to help with Bi-polar, panic/phobias, and even paranoia too. Also eating disorders. Back to still feeling rotten when doc say normal---------That is not normal for you! We have different levels of where are Ts should be to feel good, and you still sound hypo. Guest guest
First of all, thanks for the support. My problem now is finding and endo that will understand and treat me appropriately. In the past I've seen two endos and both checked my thyroid and didn't FIND a problem. My psychiatrist is the one I have gotten to try and address the problem and initially he suspected with the changes in lab ranges recently and my history, that my thyroid function could be the problem. Does anyone know of a good endo or any other type of physcian in the Austin Texas area that might be able to evaluate me and offer some help? thanks, scott > , First thing------if you are still feeling cruddy, when the docs say you are " normal " then you are not, especially when your TSH still is somewhat high.
