Guest guest
I believe that dressing neatly and appropriate for the occassion is really important. I appreciate it when male applicants show up wearing a tie, and if they also wear a jacket, vest or sweater it's also great. A suit is amazing and indicates they do have another life that requires dressier or more formal wear. Females dressed in slacks or well fitting tailored skirt and neat cotton or silk shirt, a decent sweater (in the decent vs. indecent meaning), and CLEAN shoes are always welcome. Many recent grads from several internships that I think are the best in the area also may show up to interviews wearing a suit. All that being said, when going to work in nursing homes, expecially in rural areas, I always advice my staff to dress down, not wear the suits, be professional, clean and neat, but also practical and down-to-earth. Example - spike heels and strappy sandals are not acceptable and are in fact dangerous, to say nothing of having sore feet and blisters at the end of the day if in the kitchen or standing at the cramped nursing station charting all day. Decoletage is unacceptable always, as are very tight clothes that show more than your figure than if you were stark naked, and I've seen those worn too. Naked bellies showing the belly button, even when just a tease when arms are raised bc the shirt is too short are a no-no. Long flowing hair although beautiful, sexy and admirable (if anyone has the time go for it!), is inappropriate and dangerous (and I for one would wash mine every day if I'm in a nursing home whether on the floor or in the kitchen bc of potential bacteria plus the smells hair acquires). So, like your neighbors said and you reiterated: appropriate clothing is essential for the occassion, as well as necessary for safety reasons. And btw, when I work in the office I wear suits. When I work in the nursing centers I wear rubber soled shoes, slacks or skirts and shirts that are appropriate to the occassion and location, and sweaters over them if chilly. And of course, nothing hanging that can be trapped by equipment, catch on fire, or worse, a resident can grab. My favorite story is that of Isadora Duncan. She was someone I've read about throughout my lifetime and one of my favorite people although not the most admirable or smartest. And look at how, and why she met her way too early demise! Guest guest
On another note..... just wanted to add that many modern fashions do not necessarily fit well, and typically an interview outfit should fit appropriately. This is subject to one's view regarding clothes, but still worth mentioning. Also, when I was an intern, we had a gal from the local department store come in and determine our " colors " . Based on skin tone, etc, she told us what clothing colors were most flattering on each of us. I learned I was in the " warm " color family vs the " cool " . And she discussed some basic marketing truths behind colors..... red signals confidence / strong character feelings etc. Interesting stuff (for the glam dietitians out there). Well, at the end of our road is a gate that you needed to get out of the truck to open - Well, she'd whine that " I fell on the ice at the gate " - All the other neighbors would just respond " Well, then. . . wear appropriate shoes, not heels! " But, she just won't get it! Okay, couldn't resist! Guest guest
I suggested to a student once that her plunging necklines even with a camisole were not professional. The men she was counselling only looked at her neck line. She was quite upset with me about this comment. I also had a student who arrived to teach a seminar with stretch cream pants with a very visible blue throng underneath. She is now a colleague and HATES me as I requested that she wear a lab coat over her outfit. I must be old fashion, but professionalism means no visible underwear to me. I am also an old 44 year old:) Marg Alfieri > > > Date: 2008/01/12 Sat AM 06:20:30 EST > To: <rd-usa > > Subject: RE: dress for success - ;-) > > I must say...as silly as it may sound, I have learned a LOT from and Clinton! > > Collier, RD > 9507 Hospital Avenue > PO Box 17 > Nassawadox, VA 23413 > > fax > > lcollier@... > > ________________________________ > > From: rd-usa on behalf of D Kiyomoto > Sent: Fri 1/11/2008 6:18 PM > To: rd-usa > Subject: RE: dress for success - ;-) > > > > It is the plunging neckline showing off the " girl's " > as they would say on TLC's " What Not to Wear " with > Stacey London. > > Dianne Kiyomoto, RD > > --- " Hall, Micki D. Guest guest
Marg, You're not old-fashioned. Good taste is more like it. I can't believe some of the outfits that I've had to interview people wearing. Not just the low cut and tight, revealing clothes, but some of the most inappropriate clothes. They run the gamut; from wearing clothes I'd only wear to do gardening, clean house, or ride dirt-bikes in the desert, to wearing clothes that would embarass a street walker. I'm not certain that good taste and common sense cannot be taught. Digna Re: dress for success - ;-) > > > > In a message dated 1/9/2008 6:06:46 A.M. Guest guest
I was nominating my younger daughter recently, and completed the form, then read the *** must read*** warning. The chosen nominee must pay all taxes for any prizes or gifts. So figuring that they give $5000 worth of clothes, if tax rate is 35%, the " winner " (now loser " ?) will have to pay a minimum of $1750 to Uncle. Exact quote is: " Applicant agrees to pay all federal, state, and local taxes, including income, use or sales taxes or any other governmental charges imposed on prizes, including the value of any goods or services received and cash gifts, if any, given to me or received by me by reason of my participation in the program and I release and indemnify producer from any liability therefore. I also authorize producer to deduct or withhold any such taxes or charges that require a payment prior to delivery of said prizes, cash or gifts. " Not a good deal as far as I'm concerned. So I didn't send the nomination... Guest guest
I'm behind on my reading, and just read your message and the others. I have to comment. I don't think it is silly. If so, then I'm being silly too. I have two outfits that I just sent off for alterations. Jackets a little too long according to what I've learned from and Clinton. Also, I'm not sure that recent graduates should be held up to this standard, depending on their financial situation. I know that when I finished college, (30 some years ago) I had very little. I was turned down for a job because someone dressed much nicer than me. Actually, I asked, and that is what I was told was her strong point over me. I actually had some experience too since I had previously worked in a different hospital, on week-ends and holidays, as relief for dietitians in order to make ends meet. I was divorced, supporting a child, put myself thru my Bachelor's and my Master's, and barely making ends meet. They missed out on a dedicated, intelligent, people oriented employee, in my humble opinion. So, need to look inside the cover too. Also, I don't have a pedicure right now. Am dying to get one, but have to wait for my toenails to grow back after finishing chemo for BC. Too much information, I'm sure. Oh well. Joan M. Quillian, M.S., R.D. Guest guest
I think interns should follow the same " rules " !! They run the gamut; from wearing clothes I'd only wear to do gardening, clean house, or ride dirt-bikes in the desert, to wearing clothes that would embarass a street walker. Guest guest
I don't think dressing well means spending a lot of money. As I said before, a newt, pressed pair of dark pants THAT FIT and a shirt with underwear that does not show outside the confines of the clothes, is sufficient. Just as long as I can see the person is showing respect for the inteviewer and the position I " m well aware of financial constraints and that not everyone can put fashionable outfits together. Guest guest
As I was reading this thread, it reminded me of the new Tide Stick commercial that aired during the Super Bowl. A fellow is being interviewed and all the interviewer can hear is the stain talking from the fellow's shirt. I think the commercial speaks to what you're talking about here. Not much gets accomplished if you can't get the person to focus on what you're saying. Regards, a a Schwartz Wennik, M.S., R.D. HealthPro P.O. Basically you dress is reducing you down to an object. Your not being recognized as the great PERSON you are.
