Guest guest
Bonnie, you state that his gastroenterologist will " put him on the list, or that he " goes on the list " at 16, but if that's what you are being told, they are flat out lying to you. There has to be an appointment for an evaluation, (which he may have already qualified for) which is usually an all day trip to the hospital, and includes full physical exam ,blood work, echo cardiogram, maybe a treadmill stress test to check the heart, and even psychological exams and meetings with a social worker from the transplant team to evaluate psychological/social issues. This is not a small hurdle. I am telling you this because it is not right for a doctor to mislead you and your husband. If the doctor told you that he would be placed on a list, then the doctor was leaving out a huge piece of information. And this doctor is NOT qualified to even make that desicision! (unless his ID badge says " HEPATOLOGIST-LIVER TRANSPLANT TEAM " or " ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF HEPATOLOGY " . That is why it is really best to only trust a hepatologist at a major transplant center for this information. We have a list available online of transplant centers in the US. You could find the closest one to your city and your PCP would need to make a referral. Here is a link to one list. http://liversociety.org/html/liver_transplant_hosptials.html Here is a link to a PDF at the cms.gov and is a list of medicare approved centers- https://www.cms.gov/CertificationandComplianc/Downloads/ApprovedTransplantProgra\ ms.pdf Any one who has end stage liver disease should see a hepatologist at one of these centers. It is the only way to find out if a person is a viable candidate for a liver transplant. Early evaluation for a liver transplant is associated with a higher percentage of good out come. good luck.
