Hi all,

I am working on a translation of an animal study involving the biological

tolerability and pharmacokinetics of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) in

the anterior chamber of the rabbit eye, and have come across the term

" zweite Kammerwasser " (literally: " second aqueous humor " ). Does anyone know

what this might refer to?

Here is the German context:

Der bei der operativen Eröffnung der Vorderkammer auftretende geringe

Kammerwasserverlust wird schnell ausgeglichen durch das „zweite

Kammerwasser " (Wessely 1920, 1923). Dieses ist eiweißhaltiger und

zellreicher, so daß bis zum 4. p.o. Tag öfter Hornhauthinterwandbeschläge

und Fibrin auftreten. Daher erfolgt die Beurteilung der biologischen

Verträglichkeit erst ab dem 4. Tag.

My English draft so far:

The minor loss of aqueous humor that occurs during the surgical opening of

the anterior chamber is rapidly replaced by the *zweite Kammerwasser*

(Wessely 1920, 1923). This is richer in protein and cellular matter,

frequently leading to clouding of the posterior surface of the cornea and

the appearance of fibrin up to the 4th post-operative day. Therefore,

biological tolerance is not evaluated until the 4th day or later.
