They would not give me a pain shot after they found out I was leaving either, but guess who showed up just as I was getting ready to leave. The surgeon who was supposed to have done emergency surgery two days before. He said if I left, I might die before I reached the nearest hospital whcih was 3 hours away.in the direction we were going. But they did draw some blood, and when the results came back, their tone completely changed, made arrangements to admit me and by that time didn't have to have the emergency big scar surgery but got the four point surgery. Even the cleaning lady and a lab tech said the hospital had really gone down hill and my roommates family also took her out of there. She and they were all nurses, and didn't trust the hospital to take care of her. Flew her all the way to Kansas City. The phone in my room didn't owrk, and they got upset when I asked for one which did. When I walked out to the nurses station to talk to a friend who was going to send my medical info to them, I was about to fall when I got there, all the nurses laughed, nobody got me a chair, had to find one myself. And nobody helped me back to my room. It was like a horror movie. I think if you talk to the doctor you want before hand, your mom won't have to go through whaI I did, and they will be waiting for her. Maybe they can even send an ambulance to transport her. Guest guest
Unbelievable, Jan! It is so hard for me to imagine what some people have to go thru with sub standard care. My husband had the best drs and nurses you could ever imagine. He had his transplant in Hershey Medical Center in hershey, PA. Every single person we met there, right down to the maintenance people were all very professional and respectful to us. Before his transplant, we had been in there for 35 days straight before they sent him home to wait for a liver. While he was in surgery my son and his girlfriend were sitting with me. Every person who walked by the waiting area said hello to me, and some of them got into conversations with me. Finally my son asked me " who are all these people " ? to which I responded, " that's the guy who brings dad a newspaper every morning, and that's the lady who transports him for xrays and that's one of the nurses on the floor and that's the social worker, resident dr, etc. "  You get the picture? Everyone there knew us and cared about us. To this day they are like our extended family. When my husband had to be in for 2 days in Nov. (because he had shingles) they called from the e.r. to tell the nurses on the floor he was being admitted, and when we got up to the floor they had my cot all ready so I could room in with him. I told them it was the best hotel in town and wondered when they would start putting mints under the pillow. Wish everyone had as good care as he has. Jackie >  Hi- My Mom  has been in the hospital for 4 wks.  She has Cirrhosis- Stage 4  and HE. Guest guest
Hi Bonnie: My husband had ascites too before he got his new liver. They did a procedure called paracentesis where they drain the fluid off the abdomen and then give albumin thru an iv to keep things stable. He was on a schedule where they would drain him every two weeks. It does help. Not only does it make him more comfortable and relieve the pressure on the abdominal organs but it also keeps the fluid from going into his lungs. You should find out from your dr about this. His liver dr gave him a script and all we had to do was go to the hospital once every 2 weeks and they do it on an outpatient basis. Keep in touch and let us know how you make out with this. Keeping you in prayer. Jackie > Hi- My Mom has been in the hospital for 4 wks. Guest guest
I am really sorry you are going through all of this. I do know that the system is very unfriendly to abusers of substances. I am a recovering alcoholic, sober 4 years, 4 months, 13 days. You seem to have a grasp on all the pertinent important information, and you have made the same moves I would have. I was the sole caretaker for a lady, here in Denver who was my kindred spirit. Her name was Ardis Lorraine and she passed away on August 3 2006. I was able to get her a preliminary evaluation only because she was an impatient at the time at CU, Denver, and I demanded it or threatened to just take her upon discharge right downstairs to the ER and knew they would re admit her that same day. They did not want me to do that so to appease me, they let her see the hepatologist after a 30 day stay in a nursing facility. When she did see the hepatologist, she was re-admited in renal failure. I have to admit that it was nice to have her on the transplant floor, just because of the huge amount of respect given in that place. The " tone " of the nursing staff is so serene and respectful up there. University if Colorado is a good hospital and they are friendly and competent, but the transplant floor is different. One has a better chance of surviving in a place like that just because the staff is more alert and attentive. She was deemed to not be a candidate and we asked for hospice, and she made us a wish list of all the things she wanted before she died. We got all them for her expect cinnibon, (ran out of time) and vodka tonic and Budweiser was on that list. She sipped a beer on her last day. That was how she wanted it. You seem to be between a rock and a hard place. Let me ask this question, has your mom said that she is willing to get sober? Guest guest
Jackie - I have had care and caring like that in the other hospitals I have been in, which is what shocked me so much about SunRise. I found out later that a resident of my town, Quartzsite had been a patient there for three weeks before she died. They never did find out what was wrong with her, and when the family asked for an autopsy to determine the cause of death, they were told they would have to pay for it as the hospital wouldn't ask for one. I couldn't believe it. At the hospital in Havasu, when I was checking in and out like a bouncing ball for awhile, one time when I went by the nurses station on the cardio ward, they all stood there and said welcome back, nice to see you, then thinking a little bit they changed it to sorry you had to come back. made me laugh. I hate it too, that some people have to go through things like that, so that is why I told the story, hoping our new member would be able to do something for her mother. It is great her mother has her. I was in Las Vegas without a cell phone, knew nobody there, and if my roommate's sister hadn't let me use her cell phone, I don't know what would have happened. I found out later that friends and relatives who called were told I was sleeping. The helicopter crew didn't want to bring along my bag with my stuff in it like cell phone, book, clothes, etc. I knew that someone lost her glasses either on the helicopter or at the hospital a short time before that. After experiencing both, I have no doubt where her glasses were lost. We had a meeting here with the closest hospital management shortly after I went through the ordeal. The problem is that people in Las Vegas know not to go to that hospital, so they have empty beds. They make contracts with lower trauma level hospitals to take their patients. I was under the impression they were going to cancel that contract after our meeting because many of us spoke up about how terrible it was. And they may have cancelled it, but I just found out 2 weeks ago that another lady from our chrch had been sent there. We put her on our prayer list, for both her medical condition and because of where she had been sent. Even if they don't have a contract, if the other hospitals in Phoenix and Palm Springs are full, they might have to send them there. One good thing for me, since I walked out AMA, they won't take me again. Thank you God. Jan On Thu, Jan 27, 2011 at 7:36 PM, Jackie Ellermann wrote: > Unbelievable, Jan! Guest guest
Thanks Jackie, Do you know if Ascites can complicate anything if they dont get drained? ________________________________ To: livercirrhosissupport Sent: Thu, January 27, 2011 9:44:25 PM Subject: Re: Need Help!--Liver Specialist/ Heptologist in Central cal? She has Cirrhosis- Stage 4 > and HE. Guest guest
yes, it can. I'm no dr so all I can tell you is what I learned from what they told me. You have to keep fluid from building up inside the body because it will cause the heart to have to work real hard and it can also get into the lungs. 's liver dr told us it was important to keep him as dry as possible and recommended that he be drained every 2 weeks. It's a simple procedure. It's done on an outpatient basis. Hope this answers your question. Jackie > Hi- My Mom has been in the hospital for 4 wks. Guest guest
Im sorry to hear that there aRE OTHER CRAPPY HOSPITALS OUT THERE! They are totally not helpful in managing my Moms Liver, the gi dr is never around and the faMILY practice dr is an idiot for nothelping us find another gi dr or someone helpful. i am just counting the days till we are outta here- Wed now due the fever my mom had yesterday after the biopsy. they did a blood culture and it wont be read until 24 hrs for growth. Praying the sepsis isnt coming back! This am her oxygen sats are down @ 78%, with no o2, and 90% on 4 liters. From the enlarged liver pressing on her lungs, the ultrasound last wk showed no ascites, just hepatomegaly. (enlarged liver) her belly is big, but her feet have gone down a bit today. My Mom needs to be somewhere where they have physicians that can treat her competently and know about sick livers. Ron- Please let me know the name of the stanford dr that you see and if you have a GI Dr locally there in los Banos ? How long did it take to get a referral there? Thank you all for your kind words and advise! Praying for all of you- Thanks Dee

She got accepted as a transfer to SF hospital- have to ask what the name is- isnt not ucsf- they declined her again. Just found out 10 min ago. ICU Dr soo smart, things move very quickly here, she at this point isnt staBLE enough to transport, due to the lung issues. Her bili is now down to 12.8. was 18 last wk. Guest guest
Keeping you and your mom, and all involved in prayer. Hoping they will be able to get her condition stable and under control for where you all need to be. I know how difficult and frustrating it is being a caregiver and trying to move those " mountains " . Praying that a little bit at a time, God will give you everything that is needed. Please stay in touch as often as you can and keep us all posted. I think I speak for all of us as i say we are here for you. Love and prayers, Jackie Subject: Re: Need Help!--Liver Specialist/ Heptologist in Central cal?
