Katy, Fatty tissue liver disease is for many a precursor of cirrhosis, so it

wasnt that the cirrhosis problem was missed the first time, it just may have

been understated, or maybe they didn't explain it very well to you. I have

been told that mine is slow growing, have no idea when it started, like you

not an alcoholic but I did have drinks at social occassions, not to excess,

wish all the people here who have cirrhosis could have my aversion to

getting drunkl Some people end up in the emergency room and find out they

need a transplant, or are at the end stage. If you can qualify for a

transwould think that it would be easier for the patient and everyone around

them to have it go fast. Since I have to live, or die with mine I am glad

it is going slow. Some of us here think prayers are priceless so thankyou

for the gift, It is appreciated. Jan

my name is beverly i was diAgnosed with cirrhosis in 2008 and yes i was a heavy

dranker.i like you were in denial but after 5 months of isolating myself was not

going to make the problem disappear so i had to go to an out patient recovery

center for alcohol i had to be clean for 1 yr and the i would be put on a

transplant waiting list its now been 1 yr on the list and i am still waiting .as

far as your finances you need to talk to your liver dr and they should be able

to help you find some programs to help with the medical issues you can also try

the national liver association,i also use ntf go to there website national

transplant fund they have lots of good advise.hope this helps.and yes prays also

do help you just have to keep the faith.

Subject: Question(s)

About two years ago, I was diagnosed with Fatty Liver Disease. Yes, I'm fat.

Then, a year ago (when I had decent insurance)I was being checked for kidney

stones and, oddly enough, my heretofore unknown cirrhosis showed up on the scan.

I don't know if cirrhosis can progress THAT quickly...may have been a missed

diagnosis.

Anyway, fourth-stage. Really painful. Enlarged spleen. Spider nevi (I look like

I have the measles...sigh), bruising, bruising, bruising, day/night reversal (I

HATE that!) etc. Starting with the pitting edema in my ankles and lower legs.

I've never been a drinker, so there's nothing to improve in THAT area of my

life. (I'm Mormon...I REALLY don't drink. Thank heavens my Doctor knows me well

enough to believe me...other Doctors want to put all liver problems on

drinking.) I'm fat, and have been told that, whilst losing weight will help, I'm

dying anyway, so enjoy some ice cream.

Oh and I'm female and 54. Lost my job two years ago, husband's pay was cut by

40% and our insurance now has a $3,000 deductible. I am officially po'. Any

cheap suggestions? California won't help because I make $4 too much a week to

qualify. I can't afford our electric bill...how much poorer can we be? I haven't

lit a heater in almost 13 years, just to save money. (And I can just hear the

ghost of my depression-era Dad, telling me to " put on a sweater and turn down

the heat! Money doesn't grow on trees! " LOL)

As an ex-hospice nurse, I'm aware of the " icky-ness " of end-stage liver disease.

Sooooo not looking forward to that. I'm trying " denial " but that will only hold

up so long.

Any ideas welcomed.

You're all in my (for what they're worth) prayers,

Kate

Hi Kate:  Just read your message and it breaks my heart.  I'm Jackie.  My

husband, also had fatty liver (from diabetes) which progressed to

cirrhosis.  He never drank either.  He had lost his job when he was 59, and

planned on looking for another one after a few months on un-employment.  To

make a long story short, he went for a physical and they discovered he had 95%

blockages in 2 of his arteries and 90% in 2 others.  He was a heart attack

waiting to happen.  After having open heart surgery (4 way bypass) we applied

for disability.  He was turned down, and I saw an ad on tv for Binder &

Binder.  I figured 'what the heck?  It can't hurt to try'.  Again, long story

short- they got disability for him, which made him eligible for Medicare.  Then

in 2007 he had bleeding varicies in his esophagus.  In 2009 he was diagnosed

with 3 cancerous tumors in the right lobe of his liver.  He was treated with

chemoembolization and received a new

liver on May 26th, 2010.  Please don't give up.  Can you apply for

disability?  I understand end stage liver disease meets the criteria for

disability.  Then once you are on Medicare you can be evaluated at a transplant

center.  I pray you will be able to get disability and eventually be

transplanted like my husband was.  Please let me hear from you.  My email

address is jckellermann@....  Jackie
