Hello

I just wanted to know if vodka can be used with essential oils &

spring water without the addition of a preservative?

If so, what does the percentage does the vodka have to be?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Cheers

Yes.

From what I've been told, " Cosmetic Microbiology: A Practical Handbook " ,by

K. Brannan (Editor) says that 20% ethyl alcohol is self preserving and

" Preservatives for

Cosmetics, " by D.C. Steinberg, 1996, p.11 says more than 15% ethyl alcohol is

self preserving.

If you're using 100 proof Vodka, you will probably need at least 30% to 40% 100

proof Vodka to make your product self-preserving.

What else besides alcohol (as to avoid a permit) could be used as a

preservative for an EO/Hydrosol/Water mix?

You COULD use many different preservative systems but Germall Plus and Disodium

EDTA come to mind. Good processing will help a lot.

Hi Maurice,

Thanks for your help!

I just wanted to know what the % would be for 90 proof vodka, this is

the highest I could get my hands on.

BTW ~ I have ordered the books that you mentioned below from Amazon.

Cheers again,

Anita

45% 90 proof vodka will be about 20% ethyl alcohol

34% 90 proof vodka will be about 15% ethyl alcohol
