Guest guest
ADA MEMBER ACTION ALERT Oct.29, 2007 ACTION ALERT-SENATE FARM BILL To members of the American Dietetic Association from ADA President Connie B. Diekman, MEd, RD, LD, FADA: This week or early next week, the full Senate will debate the Farm Bill measure reported from the Senate Agriculture Committee. As an ADA member, you have unique knowledge * experience about the value of strong food & nutrition programs. As a registered dietitian, I am proud of the American Dietetic Association’s work on the 2007 Farm Bill. Thousands of our members asked us to be active in seeking a Farm Bill that not only provides a safety net for farmers, but also assists the hungry in our midst. You wanted ADA to speak for a Farm Bill making tangible progress to improve people’s nutritional health, fund new food & agricultural research, pay greater attention to food safety & inspection & remove features of current farm programs that unduly influence or actually limit what farmers can & cannot grow & market. ADA members have made a difference in the quality of the 2007 debate, so the Farm Bill going to the full Senate soon begins to address your priorities. This measure only goes part of the way, however; we need your help to convey that new authorities get the necessary funding so all Americans can live in a food & nutrition environment more conducive to their health. Please contact your Senators & ask them to ensure that the Senate’s 2007 Farm Bill delivers tangible benefits to all Americans. Ask your Senators to support: * Inclusion of nutrition standards for competitive foods sold in schools. * The committee’s nutrition title that both strengthens the food assistance programs & makes nutrition a priority in federal programs. * Floor amendments that achieve a better balance in farm & food policy.
