Guest guest
My endo switched me on April 20, 2001 from taking one tablet of 850mg glucophage with meals in addition to 0.5mg prandin with dinner to 4 tablets of 500mg Glucophage XR and one 4mg Avandia per day. Bg's running extremely high 200's, 300's. If I'm lucky, mid 100's whereas before the switch, rarely hit 200 and dinner post prandials in normal range(latest A1C - 6.4). My endo said to give avandia a little more time to work. Usually takes a month or more for your system to adjust. Anybody else on glucophage XR with or without avandia? Are your bg's running higher than before? Or if this is your first regimen, how are your bg's? Somehow, it doesn't seem right. Exercise and weight is not an issue. I'm a road cyclist and I ride everyday at lunch time, hard and fast. Also, when in season, I referee basketball games several times a week, two or three games per assignment. Due to insurance coverages, I had to switch endo's last year. Previous endo started my on the 850's and prandin. She said at that time that I didn't need avandia since my cells were already sensitized from all the exercise I do. However, my current endo wanted me to try (I guess for convenience) the once a day XR with avandia. I'll suggest to her to keep me on XR but instead of avandia, put me back on prandin. Any thougts group? I just left her a message and faxed over my latest bg's. I'll keep everyone posted. Steve NYC, Type II

Or if this is your first regimen, how are your bg's? I'm on 500mg of Glucophage XR per day (by itself). My fasting bg's are 100-120, 2-hr postmeal bg's are 100-130. I was diagnosed in late March and started taking G XR on 4/18/01; was on Glucovance for 2 weeks before that; so I don't have much past history to compare. G XR is doing the job for me. At diagnosis, my bg's were above 300, and HbA1C was 12.2. H. Pham
Guest guest
Steve, I take G XR and Avandia. I was staying high like that so my DR added one 2 mg dose of Amaryl in the AM. I've been in the normal range ever since about 2 weeks ago. As a matter of fact, I had my first low today. I was 95 before exercise, and ate two sugar wafer cookies. Went to the fitness center and dropped to 58 post exercise. I thought the cookies would raise me enough so I wouldn't drop too bad. I didn't seem to have any symptoms I was going low. Ate 3 glucose tabs and called my husband to come get me and my daughter. We then went to lunch and I ate Mexican. Two cheese enchiladas, side of beans, and one forkful of rice, a diet coke. I was 95 an hour ago so I had a snack. I'm watching things. I feel really good and my dr is happy with my numbers, and I can eat in a way I don't feel so deprived. But I'm going to watch the lows, I might have to have the meds lowered if I keep getting a lot of lows. So maybe the Avandia kicked in finally, or the amaryl is helping, or both. Do what you feel is best for you and approach your dr about it.
