Hi, I also had a UAE done at Lennox Hill by Dr. Javit. Mine was just a year

ago. I've been very pleased with my results. Your best bet is to read through

our archives -- side- and after-effects vary widely from woman to woman. You'll

find a variety of stories covering the gamet of responses to UAE.

Subject: Fibroids

Hi,

I'm new to all this. I recently had a UAE, July 7th, but I made the

decision to do this only after my gyn told me about it and said, " Surf

the Net. " I'm also new to e-mail and postings, so bare with me. I

guess because of my inexperience the web site I found was

www.uhmc.com/fibroids.

I didn't want any kind of major surgery so I went by blind faith and

opted for the UAE. My periods have been coming every 21 to 24 days for

the last four years and I was going through a box of 40 to 48 super

plus tampons in 24 to 48 hours. I was definetly in denial and I was

hoping they would just go away.

I know now how stupid I was.

I live in Brooklyn, NY and work in New York City. My embolization was

done by Dr. Javit, at Lenox Hill Hospital, and my gyn is Dr.

Fine, female.

I really dont know where to start in my reading of possible side

effects, etc. Could anybody help me? Thanks.

Hi Ramona,

What a small world I had my UAE done on March 29th. by Dr. Javits and

I also live in Brooklyn I haven't had my sonogram done yet because I've been

so busy with work but after this week I have a 5 week vacation and will most

certainly get around to it because I'd like to see how much my Fibroids have

shrunk. I had five by the way. I know they shrunk even without sono being

done because I can feel by touching with my hands there not as HUGE! My side

effects were very minimal. I had cramping for about 2 weeks not severe but

there nonetheless. My groin area still twinges till this day that's where

the catheter was inserted. I know when it's going to rain because that area

feels a little funny but nothing major.Hope I have helped you a bit a good

luck!

Hi!

Thanks for sharing. Tell me more about the UAE experience. Was there pain?

Did you stay overnight in the hospital? How long did the procedure take? Were

you awake for it? Did you lose much time from work, etc? I am considering the

procedure and would like to know more first hand info.

Thanks,

Beth

I had little cramping right after the procedure but from laying on the

table and having to lay in one position for four hours, my back was killing

me - but I have a " sensitive " lower back. However, the doctors had me on a

morphine pump, so the pain was certainly manageable.

>Did you stay overnight in the hospital?

I stayed overnight or most doctors suggest. I went in at 8 a.m. on Friday

morning and was released at 8 a.m. Saturday.

How long did the procedure take? Were

>you awake for it?

I was awake sort of. They gave me a shot to relax me and I drifted in and

out, but I remember quite a bit of what they said - including things like

" now what do you think that is. " I did not wear my glasses and I'm as blind

as a bat or I could have seen the whole thing on the television screens.

Also in my case the room was darkened as they did the procedure - to see

the screens better. Actually you have to be awake because when they are

taking " pictures " to see the arteries etc. they tell you to hold your

breath then I felt a hot sensation and that was the dye going in. The whole

procedure took about an hour and a half from the time they got me down to

the room and were done holding pressure on the site where the cut was made.

However I only had one fibroid and also this was the docs first UAE for

fibroids although they had done embolizations for other reasons.

They also could get to both uterine arteries through just the one incision

which was great because you cannot bend the leg that has the cut in the

artery for the embolization for that reason among others I'm sure I was

catheterized.

You have to lay completely flat for 4 hours at least then if there is no

bleeding, etc., they allowed the head of my bed to be raised but I still

was not to get out of bed.

Did you lose much time from work, etc?

I took a week off work although I may have made it back before then. I will

say I was a bit wiped out, but who knows I was a wreck before I went in -

hospitals give me the willies. For three days I had semi-severe cramping

off and on (that was about three days after the procedure). I was given

percocet to take and that at least made me not care when the cramps were bad.

I also had a very " extra special " happening about three weeks after my UAE.

The fibroid was dying and my body tried to pass it, only it got stuck, so I

ended up going in for a same day procedure wher the gyn (not the docs who

did the UAE) snip away the part of the fibroid pushed into the vagina and

then did a bit of scraping of the endometrium to detach what was left.

I recovered over a weekend from that and have to say I feel great.

I still have a smallish fibroid in the muscle of the uterus and so far it

has caused no problems, plus I have been told by the docs the UAE of the

large fibroid will also work on this one.

Believe it or not, my docs at Hershey told me that having one large fibroid

made me a less ideal candidate. They told me from the beginning that the

fibroid would die and then might break up and be expelled or block my

uterus. I think they were even surprised that the entire thing tried to

come out. (I was actually 5 cm dilated to " deliver " this fibroid).

If there's something I didn't cover please e-mail me again.

Beth,

I'm very happy treat I had the procedure done and yes I would recommend it

highly. To have a procedure done with minimal side effects and little or no

bleeding and to be up and about almost immediately is a God send as far as

I'm concerned. I've had fibroids for nearly 10 years that I know of and my

gyn has been bothering me for about 5 of those years to have a hysto. Thank

God I waited and did my homework. I stayed overnight at the hospital and had

severe cramping much like child birth for about a day but that can be

controlled with meds. What a relief to not have to worry about the fibroid

situation anymore I can finally get on with my life.

I hope that I have helped you.

Barbara
