Guest guest
I'm actually enjoying this discussion because the Cat is presenting his arguments clearly yet not insisting we use the term 'Misophonia' or editing our posts because we don't. We are allowed to think for ourselves still without being banned for it unlike some other place we know . I feel much more comfortable speaking freely here so thank you Dr. for that. And the Cat is providing worthwhile suggestions and information, so thank you too. >> Cat, I am going to be sensitive to the issues and I think coming here to discover what this community is all about is a worthwhile endeavor.> > I don't want your participation to turn into a let's debate 4S vs Misophonia over and over again.>
Guest guest
Thank you, Darlene. And Marsha, I am absolutely not trying to turn this into a 4S vs misophonia debate. I should think, however, that you would want folks on this board to be well-informed and to use terms correctly. The home page of the board reads, in part:"There are some people who suffer from misophonia which is defined as general dislike of all sound, this is not the same condition as 4S."In point of fact regardless of whether or not misophonia and 4S are the same thing, misophonia is not defined as "general dislike of all sound." And to say that it is on the home page of the board is not particularly helpful in my opinion.Misophonia is an aversive response to sound [or to some sounds] that is specifically characterized by increased activity in the limbic [emotional] system and the autonomic [fight-or-flight] nervous system. That's what it is. No more; no less.smn> >> > Cat, I am going to be sensitive to the issues and I think coming here> to discover what this community is all about is a worthwhile endeavor.> >> > I don't want your participation to turn into a let's debate 4S vs> Misophonia over and over again.> >>
Guest guest
Yes, I agree with the definition of misophonia, as I am one that suffers from it. The description of it fits my situation exactly. I have intense fear, my heart pounds, etc., when I hear a neighbor's bass on their stereo. I have a very intense reaction and cannot stand it and have to flee. Even when it is over, I dwell upon it in my mind. Then I am afraid it may happen again, which is phonophobia. However, I am fine with other sounds. I don't like them, but can tolerate it. I don't have a general dislike of all sounds, just a fear of certain sounds. So your clarification is correct. Guest guest
I am enjoying most of it myself, well, maybe once in a while it feels a bit like the dentist's chair, haha, but listen, we have really only ONE COMMON GOAL: To figure this out, to find out what is causing this in children particularly, and then to find out WHAT TO DO! To make it stop. To go back to 'normal'. To be those happy people at parties who can dip chips, clip fingernails, snore a little, feel love and warmth for all around us, without that frosting of constant interference from these distorted auditory and visual perceptions. That is what really makes me feel joyful, the thought that those three things can happen. The rest is rather immaterial in my point of view, and also way too much ego is involed in who named what, when. Who cares? Let's get on with the real work, to figure this out, how to proceed. We have good bright minds here, let's use them.
