Hi ,

To see if it is latex you can get a pacifier that is polyurethane (those can

cause cancer). But my guess is that if she does not break out then see is

getting allergic.

I would ask her doctor about it to be sure.

In VA

As I said in an eariler Post, I don't know what the percentage is of people

with Latex Allergy with only Tethered Cord...........although it can happen.

But the Incidents of it is very high within the Spina Bifida Population

along with the Health Care Worker Population.

When you hear the talk about Latex Allergy they are mostly, as it seems,

talking about it in relation to people with Spina Bifida, or if you are a

Health Care Worker. But that is not saying it can't happen to anybody else,

because it certainly can.

Hope this helps.

Sorry brande.. I'd love if we could lose this latex allergy subject..

I wish I didn't bring it up. and I will never do it again.

Re: Latex Allergies?!

I've said what I am about to say several times on the Spina Bifida Lists, so

please don't think you are the only one, but I wanted to say this.

If you are telling people that your Child is Allergic to Latex, but really

doesn't have the Latex Allergy and is just on Precautions..........I think

you might eventually run in to problems, and this may backfire on you.

I understand that it is difficult handling the Allergy or trying to prevent

it from coming on, but why lie? We don't need more then we already have. And

you could be setting up the opportunity for us to be " labeled " wrong. We

already have enough. You also might get labeled as a difficult parent by

Dr.'s and such. True, that isn't always a bad thing, it often gets things

done........but in this Case, it may make people ignore you, especially if

they know that your Child really doesn't have the problem you state.

I am not saying you shouldn't take Precautions, by any means. I am not

recommending that you do things the way I do. But I just want you to think

about how this might be preceived by others.

I know incidences of Latex Allergy are high within the Spina Bifida

Population, especially for those with Myelomeningocele. It is also very High

within the Health Care Workers Population. I don't know what Precentage is

of Latex Allergy in people with just Tethered Cord. I would imagine it

would be lower. After all, anybody can develop the Allergy. And if you

susceptible, your chances of developing it do get better with each exposure.

So, I don't think you are necessarily over reacting.........especially since

her Condition was caught early, thus has led to more Dr. and Hospital

Visits, which increased her exposure, at a younger age.

My intent was not to offend anybody, so I hope I haven't, and if I did, I am

sorry. I just wanted to point out how this may look to the outside World.
