Guest guest
hey teresa! hope robert is feeling better by now! i once had a dr. (a good one) tell me two things about frequent fever....the first was a fever is the body's way of fighting an infection (bacteria or viral) or..... naturally, a sign of an infection. Therefore the fever itself is not cause for concern, unless.... of course, it is high grade (103 or above?) or seizures are involved. some docs actually don't treat a fever as they believe it helps to lessen the infection! the second thing this great dr. said was to " treat the whole patient " meaning, regardless of how high the fever....if he is happy....then assume he is okay. given the size of your family..he probably is exposed to every virus that comes and the wire...and with the cathing at home....that leaves him wide open to come down with things. did he have frequent fever and uti prior to the catheterizing at home? just curious as we are most likely headed down this road with marlee. she too has had some whopper fevers....i always stagger motrin and tylenol as i don't know how much i agree with " not treating a fever " he he! better to see then comfy! good luck! cindy Question, & Fevers > Hello all I have a question... the past 4 weeks has had 2 high > fevers, the last one 2 weeks ago and I posted a message about the lab > results from the urine culture etc. He was put on no medicine and > got well in one day. Guest guest
, Don't know about a child like but I was told about my son when he had his appendix burst that when a child has a fever, stomach ache , throwing up or diarrhea for more than 48 hours it should be checked into if you don't see signs of improvement. Such as the fever not being controlled with Motrin or Tylenol. What happened to us with was he had no fever just a stomach ache for four days with throwing up. He then felt better than took a total turn for the worse. I had called the school nurse to ask if anything was going around and she had said yes there was a stomach bug going around. So I figured it was no biggy but then his stomach pain got so bad we took him to the ER. Christmas morning no less! Any way he didn't spike a fever till they were taking him in to OR. We found out he is one of those people who have a low body temperature and his fever was 98.6 his normal temp is 96.5. When they took his temp right before surgery it had went up to 101 which was major high for him. I felt like crap because his appendix had burst and I had waited to get him checked. The doctor of course had explained about flu bugs and how they work. (the 48 hour thing) but he was totally understanding and told us apendix sometimes go through a pr flare up stage and has asked if he had suffered a lot of stomach aches over the last few years and he had. Now I'm telling you this because this was my third child and I had been through it all or so I thought. You see children are all different and you will get to know differences in time so if you're a little over protective it is to be expected. You said has had a runny nose Has he been pulling at his ears or acted like his throat hurts it may just be a secondary thing if his sinuses are acting up. I would think if he had a uti you would notice his urine changing color and odor would be stronger. He would also let you know if there was pain there( fussy, whinny that kind of thing) Well I hope this calms some of your fears I know it's hard when they can't just tell you what's wrong. Keep in touch. Chris Question, & Fevers Hello all I have a question... the past 4 weeks has had 2 high fevers, the last one 2 weeks ago and I posted a message about the lab results from the urine culture etc. He was put on no medicine and got well in one day. Yesterday he started another fever of 102.6 I gave all the medicines some of his antibiotic, motrin, allergy cold medicine (he has a slight runny nose). I called the urologist and pcp. Urologist said to ride it out at home so I did and pcp said same. Okay, today is down to 100 and happy as heck. Will he always spike fevers (unexplained) because I cather and how sinse he is 21 months old will I truly know that it isnt a common no fuss childhood illness verses a uti, bladder infection, or kidney trouble? The urologist said not to test his urine with every fever and learn what a bad fever is with and a normal child hood illness. God, I dont think I am that good yet! I think the urologist is trying to prevent me from rushing to er or pcp every time he gets a fever, but I dont want to miss something. Anyways, I chose sinse he is so happy, to ride this one out and treat him at home. Any advise on when a fever is not " right " you know what I mean???? What do I need to look for in a child so young and with one that has never had a uti, or other things happen yet? Any input would be appreciated. Guest guest
Hi , Two of my kids always spiked huge fevers whenever a respiratory infection would start (104, 105 degrees). It used to scare the you know what out of me! When they get to where they didn't want to eat, not playing and just laying around, I kept bugging the doctor no matter what. Even with no fever, if they just seem " off " . It's sure hard when they are young and can't tell you exactly what is going on. My oldest son thinks he is dying when a fever reaches 101. They are all so different. I don't know about the cath issues, that is a bridge we have not had to cross (knock on wood). Best wishes, 's mom Question, & Fevers Hello all I have a question... the past 4 weeks has had 2 high fevers, the last one 2 weeks ago and I posted a message about the lab results from the urine culture etc. He was put on no medicine and got well in one day.
