fibroid specialist in U.K.

I have several fibroids, the largest being about 10 x 8 x 7 cm. It has

been recommended by a fibroid specialist that I have open surgery for

this, due to its size and location (he was worried that the scar tissue

left from UAE would be too large). I am 28 and do not as yet have any

children.

I am ish but currently living in Australia and would like to know

if anyone could help me find someone who specialises in this field in

the UK.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

I am not sure whether you are after information about UAE in the UK or not.

If so, I am currently trying to find out similar information myself. So far

I have contacted Dr. W. a consultant radiologist at the Royal County

Hospital. You can find out about him and the work carried out at the

hospital at http:///www.hartlana.co.uk/fibroids/thepaper.htm. There is an

email address to contact him. I did this and have received a response from

him after a few days.

If you have problems with this site then contact me. Also, if you find out

anything more about treatment in the UK then can you let me know please ?

Hi Wombat,

I am not sure whether you are after information about UAE in the UK or not.

If so, I am currently trying to find out similar information myself. So far

I have contacted Dr. W. a consultant radiologist at the Royal County

Hospital. You can find out about him and the work carried out at the

hospital at http:///www.hartlana.co.uk/fibroids/thepaper.htm. There is an

email address to contact him. I did this and have received a response from

him after a few days.

If you have problems with this site then contact me. Also, if you find out

anything more about treatment in the UK then can you let me know please ?

Which country are you in?

I know of a good clinic in Australia if that's an option.

I contacted the SCVIR a few weeks ago about IRs in Australia and was told they

know of none doing UAE there but were going to check further and get a list of

names to at least contact and check on. So far, I haven't heard back from them

but will keep you posted if they come up with any names. As for Dr. ,

he's the leading IR in Europe right now performing UAE and is probably one of

the best IRs available there. I think he's handled over 200 cases and has

accumulated several years worth of experience with UAE in the process.

he's my man then !

Now I just have to find a gyn who is prepared to consider this as an option

Dr. is also a gynecologist (as well as an IR) and handles much of his own

patient's gynecological diagnostic testing and overall clinical care. If you go

to him and decide on something other than UAE, however, he will refer you to

another gyn as he wishes to keep his practice focused on UAE I believe. He

will, of course, also accept referrals from outside gyns along with previously

accumulated diagnostic test info. He believes in active IR participation in

follow-up care of his UAE patients though and even if you return to another gyn

after UAE he would probably still be accessible and in touch with you. If you

prefer another gyn other than him, you can always call and get a referral from

him as well.

Carla,

Actually - that is just what I wanted to hear. I visited my GP today and he

has agreed to support me in my search for a different solution to

hysterectomy and will refer me to Dr. if I get all the info.

Incidentally my GP had not heard of UAE and I am sure he will be pleased to

know that he is also a gyn.

Thanks a lot - that information has just made it all easier for me !

I am replying to several of your emails including the one that was sent

privately.

Firstly - so far as the mails on this group are concerned I am both

and Leigh Donnell ! This is because when I first posted to the group I was

using my son's email account. I'm sorry if this caused any confusion.

A brief summary of my history :

GP referred me to gyn re. fibroids and ultrasound scan results. Gyn told me

that I needed a hysterectomy. I had already heard of UAE and queried this

as an option. Gyn told me that it was not appropriate but I didn't believe

him. My GP had not heard of UAE but was willing to support me if I could

find the information. I found info on Dr. on his web pages, emailed

him re. my situation and he responded that he thought I would be suitable

for embo. My GP then referred me to him.

When I queried this group about IRs in the UK Carla informed me that Dr.

is the top guy here and that he is also a gyn. This seemed good

info.

I will see Dr. on 1st Feb and was contacted before Christmas to

arrange this date. It took about a week for my GP to get a letter to Dr.

and for them to contact me. Following this it is 3-4 weeks from the

referral to the appointment. Some of this may be due to the Christmas break

in my case. Dr. 's secretary said the process of referral,

appointments, procedure etc. takes about two months. (This does not include

the affects of the procedure and follow-up etc.) My appointment with Dr.

includes both MRI and ultrasound scans.

I don't think you will have any problems with a referral from your GP to

him. His secretary is very helpful.

I should add that I have private medical insurance through my employer and

this has simplified the situation - sad but true. Dr. will also take

NHS referrals but I do not know the time delay involved in that instance.

with this mail me again and feel free to mail me if you have any more

queries. I have spent a fair amount of time looking into this now but most

of the info on UAE is coming from the USA.

Many thanks for your help, I have managed to convince my gynaecologist to

refer me to Dr , although he was a little hesitant. He was concerned

that I may not be an ideal candidate. I too have private medical insurance.

I understand through the NHS the waiting list is 5 years this could mean

some women are effectively ruled out because of the question over the

success rate for large fibroids.

Keeping in touch seems a good idea to me.

I was going to post info on my consultation anyway - just in case anyone

Best wishes for your appointment with Dr tomorrow. I had a MRI last

Wednesday, arranged by my gynaecologist, it took about 55 mins to complete.

The results will be available for me to collect on Thursday and take to Dr

.

Will be seeing Dr this Friday (4th) for an ultrasound and

consultation.

Thanks for your good wishes. My consultation went well and Dr. felt

that I was a suitable candidate for embolisation. It is very likely I will

have the procedure on 29th February in Guildford Nuffield Hospital. I am

just waiting for confirming documentation.

The MRI scan results were made available for the consultation and gave me

quite a surprise. The ultrasound scan carried out in August had shown three

obvious fibroids. However when I saw the MRI scan there were a lot more

showing. I didn't count (I was too stunned !) but I think there must have

been around 10 fibroids. I also think they must have been of several types

as Dr. felt that some would actually fall off and the others would

shrink. All of them are fairly small (by the standards of some of the

ladies in this group!). I guess the largest are around 4cms.

Good luck on Friday. I think you will find Dr. to be very pleasant

and interested.

I have a 4cm fibroid in the endometrial cavity at the fundus, ten

intra-mural fibroids one of which is 9cm x 8cm x 8cm, this has resulted in a

gross distortion of the uterus. Also Dr not only carried an

ultrasound and MRI Scan but also took an x-ray. The fibroids have

significant calcium deposits which hinder shrinkage. I was advised I am not

an ideal candidate for the procedure. Although disappointed, I am really

glad that I investigated UAE.

After discussing this through with my gynaecologist, I have decided that I

really want to clear the flooding and loss of clots which has resulted in

anaemia (7.9 even after iron supplements), extensive pain and pressure on

the bladder, backache and at least two an increase in two dress sizes if not

more!. So I have opted for a hysterectomy.

You will have your UAE on the 29th February and I will have a hysterectomy

on 1st March.

I am sorry to hear that UAE is not suitable treatment for your problems.

Even though you cannot have the treatament at least the referral provided

you with detailed information of your condition so that you are equipped to

make your own decisions.

I had felt, up to now, that a hysterectomy could be avoided unless the

patient had cancer. However, after reading your case I must admit my views

are changing. I do not know anything about calcified fibroids but I

attempted to place myself in your position and think I would be likely to

make the same decision as you. There have been some interesting recent

postings about maintaining the cervix on this group. Have you considered

this ?

I will continue to read and post to the group like you and look forward to

hearing from you.

Many thanks for your message.

I am having a sub-total hysterectomy, so I retain my cervix and ovaries. My

gynaecologist does not approve of removing organs or parts thereof

unnecessarily, nor does he push for invasive surgery. He believes in trying

all alternatives that are viable (which he has with me) and then and only

then opt for surgery. However he has cautioned me about my severe anaemia,

as delay over too long a time can have effects on other organs.
