Guest guest
Biddy, Your doctor has finally recognized your " brain fog " or hepatic encephalopathy. It is a complication of end-stage cirrhosis and is associated with high concentrations of circulating ammonia. Reducing the ammonia should reduce your confusion. Ammonia is a waste product of metabolizing protein, so reducing protein in your diet, especially red meats, might also help. Please take care, Biddy. We all look for your posts and hope you are doing well. Tim > I just had another workup (blood) from my doc here. Guest guest
Biddy: this is what they refer to as encephalopathy...My understanding is the " normal " range is about 35-65 meg/dl in adults. Do you restrict your ingestion of meat (protein)? This can dull your mental functions and even the changes in personality. Guest guest
In determining encephalopathy, the reading of the ammonia level is less important in than the symptoms of brain function. So the number doesn't mean all that much. Roy T. ammonia levels > Biddy: this is what they refer to as encephalopathy...My understanding is > the " normal " range is about 35-65 meg/dl in adults. Guest guest
Hi! I usually only eat chicken, but not a lot of that. I know that several kinds of veggies contain a lot of protein. Will work on that. You and Mike were in this group when I started. Pardon me but I do not remember what stage of PSC you are in -- is it Mike or you? I know I should remember this, but as you know lately I cannot recollect hardly anything. And when I try and rack whatever is left up there (LOL), I get frustrated. Do you know how Joanne is doing? If so, please let me know. Again I probably know this, but just cannot remember. Guest guest
Does anyone know if there is a difference in eating red meat and poultry/seafood as far as the ammonia problem is concerned? I have reduced the red meat in my husband's diet (dx. 1998) (Mitch) and have put him on only poultry and seafood. Is this protein the same as red meat protein? I am hoping it is much safer! If anyone knows the difference in these meat/poultry please let me know. Thanks,
Guest guest
I don't know if it is 'my Mike' you are referring to because there is another Mike on this forum also. To tell you the truth, I have no idea what stage he is in because he's never had an ERCP done, only an MRCP. Is there any way to tell? His main bile duct is normal, there is no dilation in the smaller ones, esophageol varicies only a few and grade 1 (?), slight portal hypertension...anyway, if it was me and Mike you were inquiring about...that's the dirt.
