We (Salem County NJ) switched from vhf/uhf to Motorola's 500 mhz system four

years ago. We had some minor problems, and we continue to learn today, but

overall we are very pleased with the new system.

Our original problem was with Motorola sales staff who sold us a system that

they led us to believe was 100% coverage. And while 100% coverage is true, it is

deceiving. They claim that we didn't ask our questions properly. We wanted 100%

coverage including inside all of our buildings, however we only said " 100%

coverage " . Therefor there are a number of buildings that we cannot reach the

repeater from within. But, as volunteer fireman always do, we discovered how we

can deal with that situation, by using " off-repeater " or " talk around " functions

that are available on our system on conventional channels.

With a little bit of operational training, and enforcement of radio

operation procedures, any radio system with a sound structure can prove

beneficial. I have no experience with an 800 mhz system, but from the sounds of

it, I am glad we didn't take that route. I am happy with 500.
