Hi,

You may be paranoid, but are you paranoid enough? Besides even if you are

paranoid it does not mean they are not out to get you.

ALSO, as a good Citizen of Cook CO. Illinois, you know the county closest

to the city in the state that is the suburb of Chicago,

VOTE EARLY, and VOTE OFTEN.

But really get out and vote.

I keep hearing voices (unless I turn off the radio and ignore the

phones) and after contact with IRS, I *know* the goverment is out to

get me. My wife isn't really keen on me liking tall women (or short

ones, either, for that matter).

Does this mean I should quit? <g>

It's a good thing that I was hired a long time before psych

testing (they didn't even check my references, let alone do a real

background), they might have found that I was psycologically

unsuitable for this job and would probably quit or go doobie-floobie

(a technical term). Of course, they do worry when I come in with my

" Go Postal! " sticker on my briefcase...

The MMPI (Minnesota Multi-Phasic Personality Index) was SUCH an interesting

test. I have giggled my way through it a few times - the very first time

in high school (I attended an " alternative " high school in my senior year

and they were really into testing the students, due to some grant or

another... ) and a couple of other times when I was trying to get back into

Public Safety Communications after a geographic change in my life.

The psychiatrist who reviewed my test results with me the last time was a

very personable individual who spent a bit of time just casually chatting.

When I remarked that I thought the MMPI was a rather out-dated instrument,

he chuckled. He said it WAS an old test, and it was - obviously, given the

battery of examinations and tests - only one part of the evaluation. He

said results had to be tweaked a little bit, since the NORMAL " law

enforcement " psyche read as fairly paranoid. After all, people DO stop

talking when we walk into a party, and people ARE " out to get " cops, and we

do see the bad things in life more clearly - and often - than the pretty

stuff. That tends to skooch us higher on that paranoid index.

I admitted that I was very amused by one of the statements (with which one

had to agree or disagree): I often have very strange thoughts.

Gosh.. uhhhh.. doesn't everybody? Hasn't everyone had one of those strange

ideas flit on through or scuttle around inside the head, and y'all went,

" Whoa..... what was THAT all about?!? "

Right? Please don't tell me I'm alone in this.... (The shrink agreed with

me, does that count?)

I have a little metal stick figure holding a sign which reads " I refuse to

have a battle of wits with an unarmed person. "

I own a bumper sticker from way back which I had affixed to an attache case

I used to carry: " Dial 9-1-1 - cause shit happens. " I loved that bumper

sticker, but I knew it wouldn't be " cool " to carry it in this day and age

(and of course, I'm supposed to be a good role model and not use bad words).

I don't think too many people would be surprised to know I get a certain

amount of flak over my personal motto appearing on every single one of my

e-mail messages, because I use it at work, too. It's NOT a " wry statement "

- but it's frequently perceived to be one. <shrugging>

On some days, I suppose, it could have that spin. Sometimes it's the only

possible response to a direct order given after a lengthy discussion of

some issue. (Yah, I don't always agree with administrators behind closed

doors.)

After particularly " odd " calls, one of my dispatchers will stand up and

intone, in this deeply disturbing voice, " Ma'am! [or sir], put down the

phone and step AWAY from the crack pipe! "

I think we're all pretty twisted. And I mean that in the nicest possible

way. <grin>

No offense to anyone, but I think you have to be slightly " off " to want to

work 911. I know all *all* of my co-workers are definitely off-kilter, and

some are quite looney (me included!)

Some people can do this job, some can't.

That really _is_ what they are testing for, however the key is just

how " off " we really are. <g>

---

Similar situation:

I'm my dept's " propeller-head " (sysadmin for the dept computer

network, computer hardware tech, etc). I applied to go to a state

authorized " computer evidence " collection class. There was some

initial concern about my " civilian " status (their prior experiences

were mostly " clerks " with limited law enforcement experience and

wanted to stay with " street hardened " cops - bloody elitist!) because

of what the data might contain (they had recently had a grand juror

go down with a heart attack while viewing a particularly disgusting

pix). Only after assurances of my dispatch experience did they

accept me for the school (April, 2001). Since I've been pretty much

do the tech work for our detective anyway, it will be fun to be

" official " at it.

Dispatchers may not have " seen it all, " but we come close to having

" heard it all " and are aware of how people can mistreat people

(usually by talking to the victims - including colateral victims,

like family members). Even if you aren't there for a really " bad

one, " you'll end up hearing all about it (which is as it should be

because we can't pick and choose what calls we get and all

experience, even second hand, is valuable to make sure we know how to

handle a similar situation when it occurs).

It's no surprise that our outlook is a bit kinked relative to

" normal " society, what is surprising is that we aren't worse.

Sounds like they would not only have hired you but they have found you to be

management material. (LOL.)
