The average physician in Canada earns approximately $250,000 per year, according to data reported by DiscoveryFinance.com. Average salaries for Canadian doctors vary depending on a number of factors, and the amounts they take home differ from that of their American counterparts.

Location

Salaries for Canadian physicians vary depending on province, according to DiscoveryFinance.com. On average, doctors in New Brunswick, Ontario and British Columbia earned more than doctors in other provinces. Quebec paid doctors the least, according to 2005 data, with family doctors there earning only $171,000 per year---$30,000 o $60,000 less than in other provinces---and specialists there earning approximately $100,000 less per year.

Generalists vs. Specialists

Family medicine physicians in Canada earn far less than specialists or sub-specialists, especially cardiovascular or orthopedic surgeons. Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP), an advocacy group, reports that even though generalists in Canada earn about $80,000 less than specialists, they still earn more than their American colleagues.

Related Costs

Although American doctors make more money, Canadian physicians take home more of their pay than their counterparts in America, according to Physicians for a National Health Program. Malpractice premiums in Canada are approximately one-sixth the cost of those in America, notes PNHP; and because of the single payer system, administrative costs are lower as
