Guest guest
That is one of the reasons I thinking posting for me is stress relieving....sometimes getting the worry out there actually eases the worry...Go figure....What ever works... Yea...Ty would much rather drink water than anything....Really doesn't like soda and has an occasional juice.....Used to like apple juice alot....his main drink....but it is one of the things he gets when he is in the hosp....for Crohns....He is usually NPO....nothing and I mean nothing by mouth for anywhere from a couple of days to 2 weeks....gets a sponge lollipop...yes sponge....no ice chips no nothing.....and he usually is the 2 weeks....then on liquids...jello(he hates)ice chips, chicken(he says it tastes like soapy dish water) yummmmm......and apple juice.....Needless to say these are things that when he can eat he stays away from when he can eat......I'll never forget when he was about 10 or 11 and on no food for almost 3 weeks...being fed IV....we were watching TV...you don't realize how many commercials are about food.....Well a Sizzler(steak house) one came on...Ty loves steak....He started to cry...and then we started to laugh....it was too much....now it is a running joke when he is there...The nurses all know him by name so when we go in they are all like " Hi Ty " ...he has litterly grow up with them from 10 to 17....and some of them are very cute.....We have some pretty funny stories.....Ty and I always take a deck of cards and play 500 rummy....but we just keep playing the same game until we go home...keeping a running total....We've gotten up in the 1000's many times...that also becomes a joke.... You learn to bring some things from home to make the place comfortable.....he always brings a pillow and this one blanket that he got from an elderly man who became a very good friend of ours....Ty only had one granpa and that was my dad and he died when Ty was very young....and then this man came into our lives and he was special to Ty.....He has always called it his Joe blanket and it travels with us to the hosp. the only time he uses it is when he is sick and he doesn't care what anyone says....It has Sesame Street characters all over it.....another one of our funny things that go along with hosp stays..... What ever works..... Athought about the Liver Book for ....You might think about introducing other surgery books for kids first...something that has nothing to do with ...like tonsils...broken bones and getting casts...etc....then after he seems to be handling them you can bring in the liver book....There are so many books out there to prepare kids for hosp stays, procedures, surgeries etc....if finds out about the liver book first that might scare him...since you say he is a little skiddish already...Maybe just seeing that there are all kinds of surgeries and things NOT just the LIVER THING....If he sees that many children go thru all kinds of stuff maybe it won't be so scary...I think Tyler being with me alway when had to have tests etc that when it came time that he did get sick it was not to a place he had never been....and the doctors were the same....He trusts them alot and really looks up to his 2 doctors... Being young like he doesn't know about all the other body parts and even a broken leg if he has never seen someone with it can scare a kid if it happens to him....so maybe just informing him of many other things that other kids go thru will help.... Well have a nice day.... Luanne Ty's mom
Guest guest
Dear all, every time I see a new specialist, the first thing they ask is 'How much alcohol do you drink each day?' When I say I have been teetotal for about 25 years it always stuns them. Steve Lawson.
