It's a pretty short survey and shouldn't take more than 20 minutes to complete; it looks a lot longer than it is since it is mostly multiple choice questions. http://translationinternetsurvey.questionpro.com I would appreciate any and all participation. I am a graduate student at York University in Toronto, Canada and this research will be presented in my Master's thesis. All information will be kept confidential (i.e. no names will be published) and you can withdraw at any time. " Presumably one could find out surname(s) and other information that way. As someone who recently has done similar research, I very strongly empathize with someone in this type of position. " I could perhaps understand one's hesitance to participate based on this person's previous non-participation in this listserv, although that would not be my position, and I have no idea whether hdushek@... fit that discription or not. However, even if it would have been more proper to include one's surname, I see no reason to suspect why this would be 'spam' in the sense that a message trying to sell prescription medication under less than legal circumstances, for example, would be spam. I am *the one* who receives the spams and filters them on the list behalf > , which is time- and nerves-consuming. Till now, I have let pass only one spam, I think (still sorry for that). I have authorized this survey because I think it is not so bad to support students, whenever we can. It's normal that you don't know every member, so I don't too; be aware that there are more than 1,160 M_T members 8-) . Participation to this survey is no way mandatory, it's up to each of us to accept or not. What I don't like though is one of the very first questions, asking for my full name. (Required field, not optional.) If the purpose is to do research on the translation reality and the use of internet, why would names be needed? Scientifically relevant conclusions can be made with an anonymous survey too. Would it be possible to rewrite the survey and skip the part asking for names? The reason why I asked is that I - and many other translators - often get very similar requests out of the blue. I have nothing against a survey like this, but I do want to know exactly where it is coming from (complete name and address of person, institution etc.) so that I can verify this information BEFORE I click on any link that could get me into trouble. In the age of spam and viruses, just a first name and e-mail address as contact information is not enough. (Think of all the messages presumably referring to your bank or credit card account, with e-mail addresses and URLs that look 'real'. And, as you mentioned, , despite all precaution it does happen that spam makes it onto e-mail lists like ours.) My appologies to Hana - I hope she understands my initial reaction to her message :-))) In the meantime, I found out that she is, indeed, a graduate student at Glendon College in Toronto - and it is quite possible that we may have run into each other at one of the annual ATIO meetings there. In the survey, I provide all the information you were asking about - university, etc. but didn't want to bombard you with too much information initially. My name is Hana Dushek from York University (Glendon) in Toronto, Canada. The reason I need your full name is in order to comply with the ethics guidelines at York University for you to give your consent to my using the collect information (and only that) in my Master's thesis. There is absolutely no other reason that I need your name, but that also means that I cannot remove that part of the survey, unfortunately.
