Thanks everyone for letting me vent!

I called the Dr this morning and he faxed Hospice. I received a call this

morning from Hospice and met with her at my mothers house at lunch today.

The lady was wonderful! She put us at ease and told us all about what they

will do for my mother. She's scheduled someone to come 3 times a week to

give her a bath, do her hair, put on makeup and paint her fingernails and

anything else she needs. They feel when someone looks good on the outside,

they feel better inside. She's also bringing a liquid pain medicine a

generic of morphine to give her. She will receive this and 15 minutes

latter if she still feels pain, they will give her another dose. They have

Drs on call 24/7 and they will come to her house to evaluate her and help

her as needed.

They have nurses, doctors and Chaplins on call to meet with her and the

family as needed.

They are definitely the answer to our prayers.

Thanks Jackie, Bev.

We haven't told my mother that it is Hospice that was visiting today. The lady

just told her she was a nurse and the Dr called her to come and visit her. She

was satisfied with the explanation! I know we will eventually have to tell her

about Hospice, but didn't want to today. I'm calling her minister and get his

advice.

Thanks everyone for listening. I really appreciate this list. I've learned a

lot from here. Thanks to Bobby for " pushing " me into calling Hospice. I should

have listened sooner. It's like a big weight has been lifed from our shoulders.

We sat down with Hospice today and just cried. Both my sisters and I cried. My

brother can't deal with this so he's sticking his head in the sand for now. My

father in law is a Baptist minister and I will be talking with him soon! I know

that sounds strange because we always talk, but nothing like this.

Again, thanks for listening.

I guess most folks will go through something like this, some worse, some not as

bad. I believe that if ther werent struggles and suffering, we wouldnt really

ever appreciate all the beautiful gifts life has to offer. Thanks for your

thoughts. Love, bobby

I'm praying for you and your mother. That smell is part of the 7 hells of liver

disease. I pray that hospice come fast. I do not think you are equipped for

this. When my loved one Ardis died, she required an army of hospice workers. At

one point, every CNA available was attending her. I felt a sense of pride and

comfort watching them fawn and smother her with TLC. They can change the sheets

with only a minimal amount of disturbance to the patient. God be with you. Love,

Hey everyone,

I received a call from my sister and my mother isn't doing well. I went out

there tonight and she's in a lot of pain. I'm calling the Dr tomorrow to get

Hospice started. Her eyes are yellowing and her skin is yellow. She has a bad

odor. Not body odor, but another odor. I wanted to call 911, but she's

insisting that she stay at home. I offered to call the Dr to have him increase

her pain meds, but she insisted that it was after hours and didn't want to

bother him. She's in and out of her mind. She quite lucind at times and then

at other times, it's as if she's not there.

Thanks for the shoulder to cry on!!!

I am sorry for sounding desperate for you, and especially your mom. There is a

presentation in our files here called " end of life, getting it right " .

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/livercirrhosissupport/files/

It says that you only get one chance to get it right, and they are not lying! In

May this year, my aunt , the most sweetest lady in the whole world passed

away. My wife's famous neuro surgeon tried to save her but there was to much

brain damage from the stroke, and she couldnt be saved. As she lay in ICU,

suspended between worlds, her husband, my uncle was in jail and couldnt be

released ...

(a total fluke, he is no outlaw, this was a misunderstanding, and he was

arrested in a different city, and was transfered to Denver to face chargesd of

failur to appear/ He was lost in the system for 7 days!)

....in the mean time, when the decesion was made to withdraw life support, I was

cringing, because hospital ICU is a terrible place to administer end of life

care. The hospital is really good at saving people, but not so good at sending

them on in peace and comfort. Hospice nurses are very very good at what they do.

ICU nurses are really good at what they do, but the two disciplines are as

different as night and day, literally. The hospice nurses give the patient any

thing they want. They withdraw most medicines unless to do so would affect thier

quality of life, and they really attempt to put the patient at total ease, and

comfort. I hated the idea of having to give up and call a hospice for my best

friend 4 years ago,, but in the end it was the single best decision I ever made,

and this is why I urge folks in a similar situation to do it. God bless you and

your family and may god comfort your mom. Bobby

, I am so happy for you, your Mom and your entire family. Nothing

about this is going to be easy, but having Hospice to guide you and share

the burden is such a great relief! Please know I continue to pray for you

and your family. Again, I am just so very thankful you now have the Hospice

team to help you out!

Many hugs.................

Bob,

No need to apologize! I needed that " kick in the butt " ! You are so right, they

are better prepared to handle this than we are.

Hey everyone,

I need advice. I've called Hospice for my mother. I met with a nurse on

Friday. Saturday no hospice, Sunday no hospice. No nurse came on Monday. I

called to ask what was happening. Was told the nurse " was too busy " . I became

upset and told them to give me the medicine and I'll give it to her. She was in

so much pain they finally ordered morphine for her. I gave it to her on Monday.

The nurse finally came on Tuesday, gave her some morphine and stayed for about

20 minutes. She left. I met the social worker last night and was told all the

good things they do, but again today, no nurse My mother is now sleeping and

has been for 24 hours.

I've heard so much about Hospice, but nothing has come true. I'm now ready to

tell them to get the hell out! I'm so upset with them now. I'm calling their

director tomorrow and let her know what I think. I'm only hesitating because I

think they take it out on my mother.

Has anyone else had this happen?

Oh, .  You poor man.  I was so upset after reading your post just

now.  I cannot understand how you and your family can be treated so badly by

your local hospice.  We had such a good experience with them for my mother in

law and I have heard some others on this group say they have had good

experiences too.  Where do you live, if I'm not being too nosey.  I wish I

lived close enough to you that I could come and help you out.  Please keep us

all posted on how things are from day to day, minute to minute.  You are

definitely in my prayers.  Keep calling them until you get the right person who

can respond professionally and most of all compassionately.  Don't be afraid to

be an advocate for your mom, and for you too.  The squeaky wheel gets the

oil.  Love, Jackie

Hi :  Just can't get your situation out of my mind.  After I emailed

you I drove over to get some gas in my car.  I do my best thinking when I'm

driving, and I was thinking about what I would say if I were in your shoes.  I

would call the director and calmly tell him/her what you have experienced so

far.  Make sure you keep your tone of voice even and non-threatening.  Tell

the director that you understand how busy the nurses are but at the same time

you and your mom are in a desperate situation.  You have been advised by her

drs to call hospice because there is nothing else either of you can do now.  It

was explained to you that the purpose of hospice is to make the client and

family comfortable thru this difficult phase of life.  Re-inforce again that

you know they are busy but you are not able to do this without their help and

expertise.  Ask them if perhaps there is another hospice chapter in a

neighboring county that could step in

and be of some help, but the bottom line is:  you need someone to come and

help you now.  Maybe then they will understand how desperate your present

circumstances are.  Still thinking of you & praying.  Stay in touch.  Jackie

Thanks Jackie,

I live in Bowling Green, KY. I know that our local hospice has several counties

in our area so I don't know of any chapters in the area. I've emailed the

National Headquarters asking how I file a complaint. I will also try your

suggestion tomorrow.

, I think calling the Director is a good idea, but try to hold your

temper and frustrations in check. Good open dialogue between the two of you

will accomplish much more than harsh words and insults. In my experience,

my husband was referred to Hospice when discharged from the hospital. That

was on Tuesday. The intake co-ordinator came for a visit on Thursday, as

well as the chaplain. On Friday the nurse and the nursing assistant both

came. They did not come over the weekend, but left numbers for me to reach

them should I need them. It took about 4-6 days for them to get the meds

straightened out. After that first week, the nurse came twice weekly and

the assistant twice weekly. The social worker also visited once. They

often are very busy and can't always come right away. The night my husband

died, the call nurse was two counties away attending to another family who

had just lost their loved one as well. However, she stayed in touch with me

by telephone and helped me with administering his meds and reassuring me I

was doing it right. He had passed at 1:30 a.m., but she didn't get there to

pronounce him until 3 a.m. When I was running low on meds, I called them

and they called scripts in to our local pharmacy and a family member would

go pick them up for me. It is a relationship that requries a lot of

communication and understand on all sides. Once you reach an understanding,

I have found they are wonderful people who go beyond the call of duty to

help us through our darkest hours. If you cannot come to an understanding

with this Hospice; perhaps they just are not the group you need and should

ask for a referral to another Hospice provider. Your Mom's doctor should be

able to handle that for you. Praying you can get this all worked out and

can find the right fit with a Hospice program that can meet both your Mom's

needs and those of you and your family. Just one last word, I don't think

you will find an agency that will guarantee a nurse's visit daily unless you

admit your Mom to a Hospice facility or to the Hospice rooms at your local

hospital. Praying for quick and satisfactory resolution to your concerns.

Many hugs...............

It is my understanding that there are different types of Hospice. Some are

eqipped to give more services than others. It sounds like '

situation is similar to mine. one hospice facility availabe. Here the

office is 80 miles away. Some require a doctors assurance the patient has 6

months or less to live and others don't btw, yhe cast came off today,

yipee.now I just need 4 week of twice weekly pt. Just realized that will

overlap my treatment two weeks for the stomach infection which has been

called very nasty by two doctors and a friend who has had the same thing.

Pray for me, please Jan H

I have no experience with hospice when it is done at home. I took my loved one

to be an inpatient in a hospice, and have no regrets whatsoever. They gave her

around the clock care and TLC. She had asked for a cold beer as a dying wish,

and the doctor even wrote a prescription for it. She did manage to have one cold

beer the last night she was alive, and she seemed to enjoy it more than

anything. I was very surprised that it did not interact with the morphine, but

now I know that it is because the morphine has much much less side effects when

it is " butting " up against real severe pain. I was heartened when you said that

hospice was going to take care of youir mom. Hospice is a " consumer good, and is

subject to your satisfaction ior dissatisfaction. You can fire one and hire

another, as far as I know,. Her insurance must be contacted though. In order to

make sure it will get paid for, her insurance will help you find the best

soloution. When they are inpatient in a hospice, it is much less likely they

will be neglected, and then the patients whose families are present are going to

get the most care, for obvious reasons. When Ardis was in the hospice, there

were lonely patients who seemed to have no family at all and it seemed that my

loved one took a lot of thier attention, because I never left her side in three

days. She was only there for three days. I am very very sad for you and your

mom. I hope that you can get her admitted to an inpatient hospice. I know that

others here have done hospice at home, and it seemed to work for them, but for

me it was impossibl, becaise my loved one couldnt be in my house because of her

allergy to cats anyway, and I definitely wouldn't be married now if all the

things that came to pass happened in my house.

Good luck, and G-d speed. Bobby

Has anyone else had this happen?

put up a good fight against this disease.

Again, thanks for your help!

i am reading this old add, it make a lot of sense, some of us dont know

where the diease came from. What if we older people was born with it and

just didnt know it. i am trying to learn all i can about the diease, it is

pretty surprising, one day you are up and the next day are down and you just

dont know why.

then you have the misinformed doctors, who just dont seem to care. hep c,

is a sickness that one just cant explain. some of the episodes that most

are having i dont have as of yet.

i worry most of the time about liver failure of not being treated in time,

my reasons for that it seem that most doctors dont want to help you

unless, you are planing your furneral.

every 6 months i go in for blood work, mri with constrast. for the past 10

years, no markers, but i was told this is stage 4, this last test suppose

to have showed small lessions,

my biggest problem is not understanding the digesting system, and why the

stools keep changing colors. 2 days very light, next 3 days almost black.

why is it most of the time you are so weak.

last questions, i am having real pain in the right side, i told the

doctors about it, but say nothen is wrong. i wake up and all through the day,

it

feel like a bottle size hole is in the right side. i try to be nice as i

can to all doctors but what i am finding out most need to be in another

profession.

thanks all for listening, i am happy to annouce, that i am working on my

liver support group (here in chicago.)

i am going to need all the advice and understanding you guys can give me.

i know it is going to hard, time consuming and a whole lot of patient, but

i plan to do this, before i get really sick,

Thanks to everyone for listening, keep me in your prayers,

sincerely in Chicago

Thanks Barby, but I've just decided to leave it alone! I was making a donation

to United Way, but found out that United Way supports hospice so I pulled my

donation to United Way and will be giving to another charity. I've not heard

from the National Headquarters either. I called our local hospice on Friday,

but never heard anything until Tuesday. I wasn't at home so they said for me to

just call them back. We just buried my mother's ashes today and I'm too tired

to fight any longer.

Again, thanks.
