Back

in 2005, I discussed on the list the possibility of multiple Schedule 2 Rx’s

and future rule changes.

Guess

I never really followed that up.

The

rule was updated in 2007 to reflect the option to give 3 Rx’s –

each for 30 days – giving a total of 90-days of meds – if certain

guidelines are met – see below.

I

guess this Federal Rule can be over-ridden by local State guidelines on

prescription refills, but…for those in States that don’t prohibit

the following – are you aware of the option to give 3 Rx’s for

Schedule II substances – up to 90 days worth?

I

was looking around for the info and kept stumbling on the Federal Register

stuff regarding changing the rules (see bottom of this e-mail), but the horse’s

mouth is the DEA webpage at…http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/21cfr/cfr/1306/1306_12.htm

The

reason I bring this up is – mom calls for refill of Adderall XR to pick

up for her adult (20yo) daughter who is away at college.

It

seems reasonable to do the 3 Rx, 90-day option below for the patient and

provider’s convenience.

But

I couldn’t remember if that rule had passed or not.

Of

course, in other states, these Rx’s must be done in triplicate or they

may have state legislation preventing what is allowed by the Feds.

I’m

not aware that Colorado specifically prevents this type of 3 Rx prescribing.

It

appears to me that you must print/fill out the Rx’s with the same Date,

but then put the date 30 and 60 days hence fill time that the #2 Rx and #3 Rx

can be filled.

I’m

not sure my EMR (eCW) is configured to document these 3 Rx’s

electronically that way – but I’m sure there is a work around.

Thought

this tidbit might improve others’ Rx flow – keeping in mind it

might be illegal in your State.
