She was being seen at Denver General,the teaching hospital here in Denver, which is the big " public " hospital. It is a really good trauma center, and of you have a gunshot wound to the head or chest, your chances are greatly improved if you are taken there. But Ardis didnt have a gunshot wound at all, she had end stage liver disease like your mom. She needed a liver transplant and no one told us. No one ever told us at all. That hospital is not good for much else after all. After her social security came in, I took her to a very very good private doctor. He told us that Ardis' only chance was across the streeet at the University of Colorado Health sciences center. Since it is staffed by the very same people who work at the " public hospital " I was sceptical. But I took her there and asked at first and then later demanded a liver transplant evaluation. My friend Ardis Lorraine was given a chance for this special appointment! Even though she was an alcoholic in denial, and in the very last stages of liver disease, she saw the head professor of the largest and best liver transplant program in the rocky mountain region. The very first liver transplant was done right there at CU. The same doctor whom saw my friend is now in charge of my case. My friend and loved one was regarded as just as important as any other patient , no matter how affluent or poor. You mom has not seen the head transplant surgeon at the transplant center near you, but she should, and as soon as possible. I firmly believe that Ardis was employed my God to show the way to living a longer life for those who have end stage liver disease. I am lighting the road for you today, and it is only because Ardis and I traveled this same road in the pitch black darkness in the summer of 2006. She went home to be with Jesus on August 3rd that summer, but there were many important lessons learned. She did not die in vain, nor do any of us. Please take your mother to the very largest regional medical center in your state, and when she is admitted, ask for a social worker, and ask for a " LIVER TRANSPLANT EVALUATION " . I have to get angry enough to make a scene unfortunately, and that's the only time my mother's doctors will give me any answers. It is sad that it has to be that way, and I'm almost envious of the people who get the great health care without having to fight for it. You're so lucky. But, that has not been my experience at all. I could be wrong on that one.....and some dentists will work with you on payments. That would be a good start. They would probably know where to lead you for affordable health care as well. Ardis wasnt officially sick because of alcohol. Her diagnosis was NASH, but she had told some doctors that she drank a fifth a whiskey every single day, which was not even remotely true. In the 9 yrears I knew her, on the rare occasion she had hard liquor, it was Schnapps. She hated whiskey. Guest guest Posted July 22, 2010 Report Share Posted July 22, 2010 Hi, hun. As far as I know it affects platelets, . My hepatologist told me that my big spleen is effectively a large shunt. Meaning that it is trapping blood, which is not getting filtered properly. A big spleen can explain my encephalopathy when my liver function is otherwise pretty good. My labs are mostly good, it is just shunting which causes most of my problems. They can take them out but it leaves you susceptible to infections, since the spleen helps your immunity. Since Forsberg formerly of the Colorado Avalanche lives his life without his spleen, my family is sure that I am fine. UCHSC is a pretty big transplant center, one of the top rated ion the world. The wait time is a lot faster than bigger regions like west coast and east coast, but not as fast as say, Iowa or Nebraska. My PCP wanted me to get a transplant out in Kansas, because I would get one rather fast there, but we are never going to move, or at least thats how it feels. If you come out here, make sure you look me up so we can be friends. I'll take you to see Dr Burton, my hepatologist, he is the associate professor at Cu, and second in command in the transplant program. He is a really good guy. I have complained about him in the past, but in reality, you could do much much worse in a doctor. No she is not on a transplant list because no doctors told her she could get on one. She didn;t know anything bout it til I told her. She went to her family dr yesterday and he's getting her blood results from hospital. Shes calling today to make appt with her gastronologist. All the dr just act like its no big deal and its all in her head. Like she's making a bigger deal out of it than it is. They don't want to listen to her. She just keeps feeling worse. She is sick all the time and she keeps getting sharp pains in her side kind of like spasms. Now her teeth are hurting and I think one is infected. She is so emotional that you cant talk to her without her crying. Im doing everything I can but these dr are really upseting me. I don't like to be rude and usually agree with what they say but this is my moms life and they arent taking it serious. I swear if something happens and I find out they didnt do everything they could there will be a big scene made. I dont understand if they took an oath to help people why are they not helping her? She is so tired of being treated llike this that she is about ready to just give up and if you knew my mom you'd know she's a fighter. All of this angry towards drs and trying to find one to help is taking precious time away from us that we will never get back. Sorry to keep ranting on Im just upset. Hope all of you are well.
