DEar Toni:

I won't tell you what to do, but I feel I should tell you a little about

myself. I can't take the meds that everyone else is on because I have a kidney

transplant and they can make my kidney reject. Because I can't take those meds

my fingers are now all deformed and my nails are not normal either. The nails

are very short and don't grow normally. They are lifted up so I can't even

put on fake nails cause they don't look right and there is not enough nail

there either. I am in severe pain all the time and have to be on narcotics

because there is nothing else that will help. I am also unable to use any

aspirin,

or aspirin products, which wouldn't help much anyway. I have a dowanger hump

back due to long use of prednisone. At least the other drugs don't do that

and that is after long use.

If you think your Dr is a jerk find another one. I am sure they know their

subject or they wouldn't be able to be licensed to practice it.

Anjillah,

Sorry to hear about you difficulties with meds. I am curious if you doctor

put you on calcium/vit D supplment while you were on the long term steriod

treatment?

My doc demands that I take 1500mg of calcium with vit d in it every day that

I take prednisone. He also wants me on a good multi-vit suppliment.

As far as the dowengers hump. I don't know your racial background but black

people rarely have problems with osteoporosis as white and asian people do. I

do not know the reason why but I have had many docs tell me that. I went for

one a full work-up about two years ago to a womens specialist. She sent me

for bone density studies. The tech and the doc in the clinic sort of laughed

at me when I reported cause they said this is mostly a white/asian problem. I

told them I was just following orders. I guess the doc wanted a

baseline...she also told me my results were being entered into a study and paper

she was

doing.

I learned a lot about my doc at my last visit from his nurse. He really is

not a jerk...just very shy and overwhelmed. We have one Rheummatologist within

100 miles that accepts most insurance. We have another major medical center

within blocks but it takes a year to get a new rheummy appnt and they take

there own HMO patients first. They have three docs. So there are no other

options

for Rheummy docs here. I use to drive over 100 miles to see my old doc after

he moved away. It got far too expensive as my insurance refused to pay for

the visits or even pay for any bloodwork from the visit. He moved out of my

network of docs.

I went with a list and made him sit and listen. He did and complied with all

my requests. The past visits I have been so scattered brained and foggy that

I basicly just sat there...then after I walked out and go to the car was

totally pissed on the long drive home!

As far as my doc knowing his area of expertise, I'm sure he does...but

education with out the ability to communicate still makes you pretty useless to

the

the people that you are sworn to help. It makes me wonder about docs that

prescribe long term steriods without monitoring bone denisty or using calcium

suppliments.

Ahhh, the things that make you go Hmmmm.....

I've read that some ethnic groups tend to have bigger bones with greater

bone mass. For example, African Americans tend to have higher bone mass. In

contrast, many East Asian people tend to be smaller and have lower bone

mass. The incidences of osteoporosis is lower in African Americans and

higher in Asian Americans. There is no known linkage directly to skin color

that I know of, it's just the different starting skeletal mass of adults in

those groups.

I'm so glad you had a good visit with your doctor. Communication between

doctor and patient make an enormous difference in the quality of care.

It can be difficult to find a doctor that you can easily communicate with,

but sometimes it just takes time to get to know each other.
