Guest guest
Hi, been reading previous postings about how some pregnant women have had ammino testing and question if this test shows SB. Well the only test I was told about was to have an AFP test done in first trimester because the first trimester is where the defect is formed. A lack of folic acid has been atributed to SB. I never was tested because I didn't know that I had SB until after my third child was a toddler. I did make sure that my two boys wife's and my dtr had the AFP done and all testing came back negative and I hope they pass this info to their children. It's my understanding that anmio test is expensive and risky to mom and unborn child and the AFP is just a blood draw. gloria
Guest guest
Gloria, I had amniio for all four of my pregnancies and I took it that the the test is on the babies chromosones this is where any major defect will show up. They did my tests at 12 weeks. They told me the only thing they wouldn't be able to tell was mental retardation or downs syndrom. I was told that they would be able to tell if the baby had SB. They also said that if my child was to have it there would be every chance it would be much worse than the type I was born with. With the last pregnancy they also did a detailed sonogram which showed every detail including that my daughter was going to look just like her brother.LOL You could see her facial features. There are risks with them doing these main one being miscarraige but they told me to go home put up my feet and drink a glass of wine. Just one of course but they said it would relax me. They didn't do the afp testing only with my last one and my levels were fine but they still considered me high risk because of the SB. I have read that the other women on the list didn't have the amnio because there doctors didn't think it was necessary but I had different doctors from my first two to the second two and they sent me to the prenatal clinic to have it done. Until I joined the group I assumed that they would do it for anyone who was at high risk to have a child with SB. Maybe it's just because of where I live and doctors are different all over. I know it saved a lot of undo stress once I had the test results back and I knew my babies were healthy. This is just my opinion of course and what I went through.
