Guest guest
Hi! Someone in a recent post mentioned those awful wire-frame monkey mothers used in a study of attachment and bonding. Any reference to this study makes me want to vomit. Literally. I have to stop reading. (I have read about this study in the past.) I also was deeply disturbed for days after watching the movie A.I. - the little robot boy - all he wanted was for his mother to love him. I couldn't shake the horrible, nauseated feeling for days. Also, a few years ago, after my daughter was born, I read a book called, " Becoming Attached, " on attachment theory (ironically given to me by my BPD mother who works in a mental health clinic). It was a great book and it made me very happy that I was trying my best to practice attachment parenting, but the beginning of the book, where children with attachment disorders and the history of attachment research were discussed, was extremely difficult for me to read. I cannot be subjective about this at all. When reading the part about the babies in rows upon rows of cribs, and the one baby who was thriving for some unknown reason - until it was discovered that the cleaning lady stopped and rocked this baby every night - made me cry. Hard. So what I'm wondering is... is this a K.O. thing, or does the general public have this reaction to stuff like this, or is it purely a me thing?? I mean, I find it entirely impossible to be objective at all, even when the subjects were monkeys, not people. Just curious... (btw, I always considered myself to be attached to my mother, but who knows? She seemed better when I was littler, but...) Tara
