Well, I for one, am most happy that you are home and posting again. You are

a wealth of information and have been so helpful to me on so many different

HOORAY! Chocolate of all things!!! I do eat it, but have felt terribly guilty. I

swore it made me feel better. I thought that it was all imn my head. Now I see

that it was all in my portal vein! Thanks so much for this post. One of my

favorite things my whole life has been to sprinkle unsweetened cocoa on vanilla

ice cream. It is a little bitter for those not used to it, but I am off to find

my can of cocoa. I'll put some in my morning coffee! Love, Bobby

Subject: Dark Chocolate

Ok, first, let me apologize if this has been posted before. I've been away for a

while and have to get back into the groove of things. :-)

But ran across this article about the benefits of dark chocolate and bringing

down blood pressure within the liver thus reducing portal hypertension. Has

anyone else seen this info?

I will try to find more substantiating facts. It is interesting though.

But please take this at face value. Time and more studies will know for sure the

true impact it has on liver health. But in the meantime. A piece of dark

chocolate once a day probably won't hurt. I'm not talking a huge dark chocolate

bar! loL! but maybe an ounce or two. :-)

Mac - Thanks for that post. I have a friend who went into the hospital for

tests on Tuesday for tests to determine why her bp is soaring and why she

has such a terrible headache. She was sent by a doctor. The checked her

out and found nothing, sent her home with a pain prescription which she

couldn't get filled at night. Yesterday she went for a previously scheduled

appt with another doctor, he gave her a pill which helped after a while and

told her to go home. This morning she woke up with soaring bp, no headache,

but it came around noon. I know that chocolate has a lot of caffeine in it,

so when I saw the article you posted. She found some dark chocolate

pudding, and before we got off the phone it was starting to help. Both my

daughters had migraines very young and they were prescribed large doses of

caffeine which took them away, so started wondering if she could be having

migraines. And I have had my blood pressure soar when I have experienced

extremely high paid. Hope it continues to work for her.

Nice to see your name on posts. Jan H

Unfortunately, the chocolate thing would just never work for me. Now, don't

throw things at me; but, I can't stand to east especially dark chocolate. My

hubby says but you eat chocolate bars. I point out that it's " milk chocolate "

and it has to have a filling in it.

As for caffeine - I was told many many years ago, that probably the reason I was

getting so many migraines was because of the coffee intake. OR, it could be the

cheese I had every day and the caffeine!! Anyway, when I was newly sober, my

breasts were very tender and had some lumps on them. My doctor (who knew

alcoholism very well) sent me for the mammogram; but, had already told me that

it was all the coffee I was drinking. Sure enough, I decaffed and got through.

LOL LOL so many people in that first group were never aware that they were

drinking decaf.

However, all of this was my reaction. I think that Dr. was right and that I'm

allergic to aged and dried products. A very good reason why I never drank red

wine too.

Gloria - I would never throw anything at you unless it was a couple

containers of asthma medications which induce asthma in me. The first time

I tried to tell the breathing tech that her medication was making me worse,

she really didn't believe me. But Ed was sitting right there and had

noticed it too, so they stopped it. Then after my triple bypass they gave me

two inhalers for asthma, plus oxygen, just kept getting worse. One of the

meds I had taken before, so I told them since I knew already that I got

asthma from one asthma med, maybe that was the problem. They took me off

the new one and my lungs cleared up in 24 hours. The last time I had a

migraine was a couple of years ago and I happened to have a box of Weight

Watchers Chocolate Caramel bars. I ate one bar just to eat it, and my

headache was almost one. So, I ate a second bar and it was totally gone.

As to the caffeine. I had been told too that caffeine can cause headaches

so was surprised when my daughters were prescribed cafergut which is high in

caffeine. But it worked, Sorry it doesn't work for you. Jan H

But, I don't get migraines anymore and haven't for let's see - must be about 31

years now. They started in my late teens and made their presence known too much

until I got pregnant with my son. That's when they ended!! So, I was afraid

that they would come back when I menopaused; but, gratefully they did not.

This may be off this topic a bit, but what what's funny about the caffeine

thing, is last year I was diagnosed with pre-hypertension. I was in for a

routine appt and my bp was 180/150. Ouch! So I couldn't leave without being

prescribed certain meds. Even now a year later with meds my bp is stil 130/80.

:-( trying to get it lower.

What surprised me though was the fact that the doctor gave me information that

stated caffeine doesn't affect blood pressure. It affects your heart rate but

not the pressure. Which is good news for me, since being in the military, I have

to have my coffee in the morning! Without that I don't know how I would get

through the first hour of " Sgt Macdonald I have a question? " :-)

There is a lot of info out there regarding caffeine and blood pressure. I can

post some links though.
