Guest guest
IF PUBLIC SCHOOL IS NOT WORKING BECAUSE OF BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS, Have you asked for/ have they done/ an FBA ? If not, request one. If they have, did they do a BIP? and if not request one after the FBA. If you don't know the "ABC" you'll never get a grip on the behavior. Guest guest
Lori, I have a 9 year old boy with Aspergers. School has been SO DIFFICULT for us! He began public school last February in Broward. Fortunately, the school has a lot of support...Autism coach, Psychologist ETC. We have an IEP and are getting a lot of accommodations. The one thing that the school cannot supply is a mainstream classroom with few kids. CARD can be a big help in informing you of which schools have good support. There is a private school in Davie, Kentwood, that specializes in kids with ADHD w/ no learning disabilities. They offer very small class sizes and a lot of social behavior instruction. The behaviors of the ADHD and Aspergers (AD) child are often very similar. My son went to summer camp there last year and LOVED it. Since we will qualify for the McKay for next year we are applying there for 2005/2006. Naturally, it's quite expensive. I know someone who has a 9 year old AD boy at Vista in Coral Springs. It's very small, which I think is a plus. His dad told me that they were very standoffish at first, but it seems to be going well. For a private school, it's not too pricey. I recently discovered that North Broward has several AD kids...also very expensive. Kentwood's address is: www.kentwood-add.com Good Luck!
