Guest guest
I will keep you on our list. After the holidays, we will have another support meeting, and will keep you posted. Parents that are in the same situation need to stick together, and let the Governor and Legislature know how the are no jobs or adult programs that have the understanding of what individuals with autism need. We need to work with businesses in the community on carving jobs for those that can work, and have good meaningful volunteer programs that can be run by adult training centers. Some of our individuals can't be out all day doing volunteer work or working at a job, and they need a combination of adult training and community participation. What is happening, for those that are on Medicaid/Waiver, they have to have either one for funding. The ones that are not on Medicaid/Waiver can't even get that option, unless they can pay privately. What a mess! Parents can't wait for things to happen, they have to fight for services, just like those of us that had to fight for school programs. My son is 34, and the first public school programs for children with autism opened in 1975. Before that, if they didn't act appropriately, they were told they couldn't attend public school. We need an IDEA for adults! Keep in touch by e-mailing asabroward@... or calling . Happy New Year! Eileen Roth
