Debra, if you are on the transplant waiting list and go in for a check up

and any alcohol is detected, they will remove you from the list. At least

that's what we were told when Terry was considering whether to get a

transplant or not. It wasn't a problem for him because he never drank, not

a drop since he was maybe 22-23 and then it was only recreationally and

occasionally. Also, if I am not wrong, they ASK you if you've had alcohol

or any other illicit drug. At that point, you would have to tell them about

the alcohol or lie. It should be noted I have not been through the entire

transplant process because Terry opted not to try for one. Just going on

what we were told while he was considering it and what I have heard others

say who are going through it.

In my opinion, if you've already decided not to opt for a transplant and you

only want to have a drink occasionally, I would do it. Life isn't living if

you never do anything you enjoy. Just my opinion Debra. Terry made the

decision not to try for a transplant. He took really good care of himself,

but he did not stop enjoying his life, what was left of it. He had days

when he ate absolutely anything he wanted. Of course, he paid the price for

those days; but to him they were worth it.

Debra - my first doctor told me that even though my cirrhosis was not caused

by alcoholism, I should not ever have another drink. His words as close as

I remember were " Every drink from now on would be like another nail in your

coffin " I tried virgin margaritas because I love margaritas, but couldn't

have the salt either, and that was part of it for me, the salt on the rim of

the glass. So, I drink water with a pop/soda a couple of times a year. And

the pop/soda has too much salt for me too. I guess I would ask a question

of myself such as, if it might make a difference in my life expectation,

would it be worth it to have that drink? Since I am trying to hold off the

really bad problems with cirrhosis as long as possible, to me it isn't. It

is a decision everybody has to make for themselves. Jan H

Jan...Ed's specialist said the same thing to him about drinking alcohol. Why

chance it? Since we were not big drinkers anyway...like you,I love an

occasional  margarita!...it was an easy decision for Ed.
