Internet explorer fails to open--

Just happened to me too -- "right click to open IE, and run "without add ons" opens very quickly now.

Did it a few times and now works ok.

It's an IE update mess-up

frozen laptop...To: "practiceimprovement1" < >Date: Saturday, March 12, 2011, 2:03 AM

Any suggestions appreciated: my Dell laptop (Window XP pro) has been taking a long time to startup and then often runs very slowly (Task Manager/performance shows 95-100% of CPU being used, but not by any program I am running: something running in the background I assume, though I dont SEE anything running under applications ).

BUT now, started today, I cant Internet Explorer to open at all: it tries but fails. I have scannned it with AVG and with Malbytes (pgm to find and remove malware) and neither have found any bad actors..

Any suggestions on repairing this illness? Virus? Corrupted OS? I hate to think about reformatting HD and reloading all software (I dont have a disc with Win XP on it , probably other pgms I dont have discs for as well. ) Is it worth taking it to computer shop for help or am I better to get another computer?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Thanks Matt and all who have made suggestions.  I am defragmenting as I write (on another computer, of course) and will try the disk clean up and the IE " without add ons " when defrag completes (it takes forever: after 1 hour, still onllyy 15%  done).  I cant get System Restore to run. ???

In my experience when so many things are unstable it indicates a bad hard drive.

Although painful and time consuming I would stop the medical workup and take a

more surgical approach with a new hard drive or computer. Computers work much

better after a fresh start.
