Guest guest
Hi All: Okay, now I'm very paranoid when it comes to UTI's since I just spent an entire year having them after resuming sex. Now I'm not with anyone. My VV and IC have flared. The passed few days the Tums seem to help some. Then I got to thinking today when the symptoms got worse, do Tums or Calcium Citrate cause UTI's? I mean it makes the urine more alkaline, right? More alkaline means more chance of infection, right? Do we still have any nurses on here? Would taking Tums or Citrate every day allow for an UTI to come right in since there isn't much acid to kill bacteria? Anyone? Lainey in a flare and paranoid as usual! <g>

Guest guest
Stacey: What you wrote made a lot of sense. I was actually thinking tonight that it feels like your PT said, like it's the vv tissue irritating my bladder, not the other way around. That was interesting about the calcium citrate theory. I wonder why it's always mentioned as a treatment for relief? Thanks for answering. I'm glad you are getting help from your PT, even if it's just the bladder for now, hopefully you VV next! Fingers crossed! Besides drinking a lot of water, what else is helping you? I've been drinking gobs of water for a while now. Lainey

Guest guest
: I woke up 4:30 in the morning with my acid reflex and then ended up with this huge flare. I also take Prilosec if it gets really bad. I'll just take a tiny bit out of the cap since I react to so many medicines. So maybe it is the Tums doing this. I do remember reading that too much citrate can cause opposite effects. It wasn't me who was helped in the bladder, that was Stacey and I asked her the same thing, what worked??? I thought Stacey made a lot of sense with explaining that it's most likely the VV tissue touching the bladder area and irritated it. I swear this is SO not fun. Guest guest
Lainey: I'm no nurse, but my PT said that the fact that if I had IC, the calcium citrate would have aggravated it. So she said my bladder problems (urgency, frequency, burning, no infection) must be a result of the vulvodynial tissue irritation of my vagina irritating my bladder tissues, since they sit right next to each other. Helping the vulvodynia helped my bladder, I guess. My vv isn't that much better, but my bladder is great. I kept a bladder diary for a week, and I went from peeing 10 times a day average, to 5 times a day average, while taking in at least 56 ounces of water/liquid the whole time. My doc confirmed this theory. I don't have IC - I would hesitate to take the citrate if I did. But who knows. Stacey

Guest guest
Hi Lainey and Stacey, I'm finding your Tums talk interesting because my first episode (and other episodes) of IC symptoms was preceded by a severe acid reflux attack. (And soon after IC I was having V). At the time I didn't know what was wrong, but I was having very severe chest pain. I could hardly move or breath. It turned out that it was an esophegeal spasm, due to acid reflux. I began taking, I think, Prilosec. And I would often take OTC heartburn medicine or Pepto Bismo. I'm not sure if I had a UTI during this time. It's possible. Hmmm. Lainey, what helped your bladder? Was it all the water? Guest guest
Hi Lainey, Sorry I got your names mixed up. That's one of the weird things lately - I get confused easily and I have trouble remembering things. I'm 38 years old - I though I'd better tell you in case I sounded like I was 95. I was never like this before. Just the other day I forgot my son's orthodontist appointment. This is the first time in my entire life I forgot an appointment. I'm normally very organized and not forgetful. Now I have trouble remembering anything. I just wanted to tell you that now when I feel the acid coming on, I drink LOTS of water, avoid any acid foods, and try not to take anything for it. Antacids seem to make my bladder feel better when the IC symptoms are acting up. But maybe this is an invitation for bacteria. I also sleep on an incline of pillows to avoid any acid reflux. But maybe this is messing up my back. Another Hmmmm. And the V tissue touching the bladder area make sense to me. Take Care, McConkey Re: TUMS? > From: Lainey9911@... > > : > > I woke up 4:30 in the morning with my acid reflex and then ended up with this > huge flare. I also take Prilosec if it gets really bad. Guest guest
Stacey, was it being on the calcium citrate that slowed down the urine for you and helped your bladder? Sorry, if I missed a thread here. Dee~

Guest guest
Lainey: Well, my bladder symptoms are gone (indirectly from the citrate). I began PT 3 weeks ago, to treat pelvic floor tension myalgia, which my doc said would develop into full blown fibromyalgia if I didn't treat it soon. My resting levels for pelvic muscles were very high (not good) at first, but by my second visit a week later, after doing certain Kegels, they were 2/3 lower. My OB was ecstatic. My vaginal spasms have almost disappeared as well. I have had sex 3 times in the last 3 weeks (my husband is elated). I still have to use Lidocaine and Astroglide, but the fact that I am training myself to relax the pelvic muscles goes a long way in the ability to have penetration. The vv is physiological, but becomes psychological too, ya know? If I relax enough to have penetration, once he's " in there " I begin to enjoy it, probably due to more natural lubrication. The next day I do not burn any worse. Wierd. Other than relaxation ability, I have no idea if PT is helping the vv. But relaxation ability is important, and I will keep going to the PT. I have gone from constant burning to mostly POC. We don't know if that is a result of stopping breastfeeding (breastfeeding gives you high levels of progesterone and relatively no estrogen, and my vv began with breastfeeding my 1 child, went away, and came back when breastfeeding my second child). Since my constant burning reappears each period, my doc suspects hormones, thus yeast. This is why I'm doing long term antifungal treatment (Nizoral) - 2 x day for 1 week and 1 x day for one month, then liver tests, and if they are OK, then 1 x day for 2 more months. I experienced the supposed die-off symptoms about 1 week into the Nizoral (I've only been on it for 10 days). If I am feeling better within a month, the doc will want me to go another step and begin the no yeast diet along with the Nizoral. I might be a " Yeast Connection " Crook poster child. So the big test will be in a week when I have my period, whether the constant burning reappears. Or it may be too soon to tell, so I may have to wait until the next period. Anyway, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Write if you have any questions! I usually don't write alot unless I am replying, since I have 2 very small kids. I've posted a lot lately though, and it really helps to talk about vv! Stacey :-)
