I'm going for all the money here. My wife is the hockey fan in the family- Go Bruins!Pelle's death was remarkable in many ways. Driving a $117,000 (in 1985 $) Porsche 930 into the wall of an elementary school is a Hell of a way to lobotomize oneself. His father flew(punny?) in from Sweden the next day, to say goodbye before the docs pulled the plug.I can not figure out why it was in particularly bad taste for the first year after his death. He was beloved in Philly. The named an award for most improved player after him.Given the hydration aspect of this thread, I'll go for extra credit noting that Pelle's blood alcohol level was 0.24 at time of impact. He was the first goalie to bring a water bottle to the net as he had several episodes of dehydration while goal tending. For extra credit- he was the only NHL player ever selected

to the All-Star game posthumously! That's my best effort, Machata

Tim,

Thank you Tim. And thank you for NOT mentioning those Dreaded Flyers..... :) "Let's Go Rangers!!!" I even have some IMP Camp Rochester 2008 with me wearing my NYR's Gretzky Tee-Shirt....

Hell at this point you get some serious EXTRA Credit my man!!! Way to go....

Many people thought the joke was in poor taste making fun of this young athlete who was starting to really hit his stride only to kill himself in his Porsche at what I believe was over 100 mph. Funny thing now we'll have to go to Wiki or something because I remember the story being he had driven himself to like a Jersey Devil's game up and down the NY Jersey Turnpike and was on his way home from that game, and did it into a barracaid. But you sound pretty darn sure of yourself... So until we find some news clipping or good wiki I'll defer to you for the moment.

Hey next good trivia question:

Who was at least the last and perhaps the only player (not totally sure of that part) to be on the losing team of the Stanley Cup Finals and yet he won the MVP Award for the Most Valueable Player of the Play-Offs??? I have a decent hint if stumped at first go....

Here's the wiki. Pelle Lindbergh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaI grew up in South Jersey which was where a lot of the flyers lived. Bernie Parent's son attended my high school. Saw Bobby e and a couple of other Flyers in Kaminski's Tavern in Cherry Hill one night, which is not too far from the Coliseum. What the Wiki doesn't mention is that the Coliseum also had a private club/bar overlooking the ice rink. I was there a couple times myself back in my bartending, disco days; as it was a private club, it could sell alcohol after regular hours.Straz

Yes, but what does that have in common with Lindbergh, who lived the latter part of his life on Maui and died of cancer?

Yes, but what does that have in common with Lindbergh, who lived the latter part of his life on Maui and died of cancer?

I'm going for all the money here. My wife is the hockey fan in the family- Go Bruins!Pelle's death was remarkable in many ways. Driving a $117,000 (in 1985 $) Porsche 930 into the wall of an elementary school is a Hell of a way to lobotomize oneself. His father flew(punny?) in from Sweden the next day, to say goodbye before the docs pulled the plug.

I can not figure out why it was in particularly bad taste for the first year after his death.

For extra credit- he was the only NHL player ever selected to the All-Star game posthumously! That's my best effort, Machata

Tim,

Thank you Tim. And thank you for NOT mentioning those Dreaded Flyers..... :) " Let's Go Rangers!!! " I even have some IMP Camp Rochester 2008 with me wearing my NYR's Gretzky Tee-Shirt....

Straz,

You are very correct about the after hours club.... and the other is correct about the school wall after failing to properly negotiate a curve (Could it have been a two and a half times over the old legal limit drunk, "Over Steered" his already, tend to be twitchy and full of Oversteer Porche so rookie Porche Drivers I hear frequently spin out with the ass swing out in the breeze??? Ya think?). Here is a set of articles about it all and they are pretty sad. It is also of interest to read the perspective of how people were still somewhat in denial about drunk driving and having a few too many for the road.

http://www.flyershistory.net/cgi-bin/hm.cgi?013hm

I'm still not convinced we needed to drop below .10 because the old limit already captured all the true abusers and frightening problem repeat offenders. I have yet to read or hear of a drunk driving accident with some repeat offender who refuses to stop drinking and driving who didn't blow .10 right out of the water in the high .10's like .18 all the way up to something like this in the Mid 2's.... By bumping the limit to .08 I believe all we have done has criminalized those folks we actually don't drink and drive, and actually drink so infrequently that they really have no idea the difference between those two levels... No decent people who have had half a drink too many at a wine tasting or something, two drinks instead of one or one and a half, because they have little experience with regular drinking, now those folks are criminals which allows the state, the lawyers and the insurance carriers to all profit off of these modest

to light very occational drinkers. Those who really know their body and drinking, their limits (and do they really and do they even care to attempt to do so in the first place???) are the regular and heavy drinkers who are more likely to have the problem behaviors in the first place...

But that is just my take on it for what it is worth. I would love to see the data that supports a significant difference between the two legal limits. If you can get ER docs and cops to talk honestly they'll tell you that they have never really had to deal with serious accident injuries and road clean up from some driver who blew a .09 or .10.... again it is these truly addicted and mentally unstable abusers who blow the limits right out of the water who are the ones we need to really crack the whip on much faster and harder to limit their ability to repeat over and over again and putting innocent lives at extreme risk because of their problems and denial.

Anyway, I am going to research my second trivia question to make doubly sure I have my facts perfect..... and the question worded correctly too....

Here's the wiki. Pelle Lindbergh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I grew up in South Jersey which was where a lot of the flyers lived. I was there a couple times myself back in my bartending, disco days; as it was a private club, it could sell alcohol after regular hours.

Straz

Back when it first happened it was one of those sort of made you cringe punchlines as you heard it. Like those who were recently so angry at Gilbert Godfried for his jokes about Japan only days after the Quake as people are still suffering the "fallout" (sorry bad pun, see???) of the entire thing.... in ten years from now who would give a darn, but right now it seems that some folks don't know how to deal with gallows humor in a crisis or traumitizing events....

As I said a few hours ago: They are dead. One flew an airplane, the other was a hockey player, a Flyer to be exact. A flier and a Flyer. May I have the 1000 frequent flier points now?Back when it first happened it was one of those sort of made you cringe punchlines as you heard it. Because they are both DEAD Flyers..... get it??? Planes vs Hockey Team....To: Sent: Wed, March 23, 2011 10:56:58 PMSubject: Re: My blog on Gatorade etc Re: Super Sports Slurppy??? Yes, but what does that have in common with Lindbergh, who lived the latter part of his life on Maui and died of cancer? I'm going for all the money here. My wife is the hockey fan in the family- Go Bruins!Pelle's death was remarkable in many ways. Driving a $117,000 (in 1985 $) Porsche 930 into the wall of an elementary school is a Hell of a way to lobotomize oneself. For extra credit- he was the only NHL player ever selected to the All-Star game posthumously! That's my best effort, MachataTim, Thank you Tim.
