time. here it is:

For my 50th birthday, my husband purchased a week of personal training . . .

.. . . at the local health club for me. Although I am still in great shape

since playing on my high school softball team, I decided it would be a good

idea to go ahead and give it a try. I called the club and made my

reservations with a personal trainer I'll call Bruce, who identified himself

as a 26 year old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and

swim wear. My husband seemed pleased with my enthusiasm to get started. The

club encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress.

Monday: Started my day at 6:00am. Tough to get out of bed, but found it was

well worth it when I arrived at the health club to find Bruce waiting for

me. He is something of a Greek God - with blond hair, dancing eyes and a

dazzling white smile. Woo Hoo!! Bruce gave me a tour and showed me the

machines. He took my pulse after five minutes on the treadmill. He was

alarmed that my pulse was so fast, but I attribute it to standing next to

him in his Lycra aerobic outfit. I enjoyed watching the skillful way in

which he conducted his aerobics class after my workout today. Very

inspiring. Bruce was encouraging as I did my sit-ups, although my gut was

already aching from holding it in the whole time he was around. This is

going to be a FANTASTIC week!!

Tuesday: I drank a whole pot of coffee, but I finally made it out the door.

Bruce made me lie on my back and push a heavy iron bar into the air - then

he put weights on it! My legs were a little wobbly on the treadmill, but I

made the full mile. Bruce's rewarding smile made it all worthwhile. I feel

GREAT!! It's a whole new life for me.

Wednesday: The only way I can brush my teeth is by laying on the toothbrush

on the counter and moving my mouth back and forth over it. I believe I have

a hernia in both pectorals. Driving was OK as long as I didn't try to steer

or stop. I parked on top of a GEO in the club parking lot. Bruce was

impatient with me, insisting that my screams bothered other club members.

His voice is a little too perky for early in the morning and when he scolds,

he gets this nasally whine that is VERY annoying. My chest hurt when I got

on the treadmill, so Bruce put me on the stair monster. Why the hell would

anyone invent a machine to simulate an activity rendered obsolete by

elevators? Bruce told me it would help me get in shape and enjoy life. He

said some other junk too.

Thursday: Bruce was waiting for me with his vampire-like teeth exposed as

his thin, cruel lips were pulled back in a full snarl. I couldn't help being

a half an hour late, it took me that long to tie my shoes. Bruce took me to

work out with dumbbells. When he was not looking, I ran and hid in the men's

room. He sent Lars to find me, then, as punishment, put me on the rowing

machine - which I sank.

Friday: I hate that idiot Bruce more than any human being has ever hated any

other human being in the history of the world Stupid, skinny, anemic little

cheerleader wanna-be. If there was a part of my body I could move without

unbearable pain, I would beat him with it. Bruce wanted me to work on my

triceps. I don't have any triceps! And if you don't want dents in the floor,

don't hand me the & *@*#$ barbells or anything that weighs more than a

sandwich. (Which I am sure you learned in the sadist school you attended and

graduated magna cum laude from, you Nazi.) The treadmill flung me off and I

landed on a health and nutrition teacher. Why couldn't it have been someone

softer, like the drama coach or the choir director?

Saturday: Bruce left a message on my answering machine in his grating,

shrilly voice wondering why I did not show up today. Just hearing him made

me want to smash the machine with my planner. However, I lacked the strength

to even use the TV remote and ended up catching eleven straight hours of the

Weather Channel.

Sunday: I'm having the Church van pick me up for services today so I can go

and thank GOD that this week is over. I will also pray that next year my

husband will choose a gift for me that is fun - like a root canal or a

hysterectomy.

Welcome!

Now, as you know with your attempt with the Atkins diet, you know you

can make it to your dream size. I personally feel the largest

difference with BFL versus all the other tried and failed weight loss

methods I have tried is that BFL is NOT simply a diet. It is a change

in your lifestyle. We learn and follow the proper methods of exercise

and nutrition and begin to transition our lifestyle into healthier,

happier behaviors.

As for your questions...

I suggest you eat at the appropriate time and not when you feel hungry.

By the time you are feeling hungry, you are risking improper quantities

and qualities of the food you will eventually ingest. It is much easier

to graze all day then pass on that candy, donut, cookie, or what ever

that passes your sight.

The other purpose in the continued feedings is the stoking of your

metabolism. The more often you eat, the more your system is fired up to

digest and spread the nutrition. Our bodies can only process a certain

amount of food in a 2 to 3 hour period. Having the same quantity of

food at a lesser frequency will result in the excess protein being

stored as fat. ...Kind of nullifies the purpose of eating great protein

rather than the donut!

Another point of BFL vs Atkins (or any other restricted carb diet) is

the balanced nutritional intake. By having protein, carbs and fat in my

diet, my appetite is satisfied throughout the day and, as you have

already experience, are not hungry for the munchies throughout the day.

BFL shakes end up costing a dollar or so, when purchased over the

internet & /or by mail order and are a great mix. I like the natural

foods for the fact that they are natural, but I find the cost to be

higher than simply having one of my shakes.

Some of the quicker meals I will eat include: Cottage cheese & fruit.

Canned or pouched tuna, chicken or turkey. Pre BBQ'd chicken breasts,

turkey burgers or lean sirloin steak. Low fat sliced chicken or turkey

breast deli meats. Scrambled egg whites on a whole wheat piece of toast

or an egg white salsa omelet.

I do eat the protein bars, on occasion, but, not only are they pricier

for protein than the shakes, they also have significant fat content, so

I try to limit them in my daily food intake.

As you begin, be sure to record all the varying measurements, and not

simply your weight. Often times, the scale will not be telling you the

whole story and it can, on occasion, be discouraging if you are not

otherwise able to measure your progress. I personally was stuck at a

weight plateau for about a year with the occasional blip, but generally

stuck until this last month. But, during that time, I experienced a

significant improvement in strength and body sculpting. Without all the

other measurements, I would certainly have been discouraged and may have

even fallen victim to an early termination of my new lifestyle.

And, in closing... IMHO, Most importantly, be sure to celebrate your

progress. Learn to look for all the positive outcomes. Look at what

doesn't work as a victory in learning and avoid making the same

mistakes. Keep yourself in a positive state of mind.

You should try to eat those meals because it will keep your

metabolism up. It will also let your body burn fat more efficiently.

As far as replacements for the shakes go, one suggestion I have been

told would be to have cottage cheese mixed with fruit. You get your

carbs and proteins mixed up in one. That is all I have for now.

I only use them for pullups and dips. I can't seem to grip properly

with them if I use them to lift.

I do have biking gloves now. I completed my first duathlon

running/biking/running a couple weeks ago. It was awesome! If I can

get some training on the swimming, I'm planning to do a triathlon next

year.

I never thought this would enjoy multisport events. However, while

training for my last marathon, I decided to do a lot of biking as

crosstraining. I really enjoyed it and bought a road bike. I can see

how it would be addicting, but it's a good addiction!

The vibration from the engine / exhaust on the HOG is likely as

stimulating to the cardio as peddling would be, so I think it may

qualify as your cardio.

The vibration from the engine / exhaust on the HOG is likely as

stimulating to the cardio as peddling would be, so I think it may

qualify as your cardio.

Candace,

I don't think the gloves will stop the calluses on the palm at the base

of the fingers, but they will prevent the toughness at the center and

heel of the palm. ...At least that's what has happened for me.

So... As long as your fingers are bent over, you can still use your

hands to pose for those dishwashing detergent commercials. :)

And Brett,

Wow! No gloves? ...And now barefoot running? Your body will be

working overtime just to rebuild your toughened skin with no energy left

over to layer those muscles. As for me, I'll keep my girly-man soft

hands and my size 13 EEEE tender feet. :)

Wow, those are HUGE feet compared to my 13 EE.

Tomorrow morning is supposed to be chest day....but my palm is still a

bit tender so maybe I'll do legs. Holy cow, I think I know why it

hurts...I hurt it playing tag the other night with my 9yo and his

friend. Hurt my knee pretty bad too. Was trying to not trample the

friend after I tagged him. Tripped (on his foot) fell and rolled out of

it. Would have just been easier to tackle him. (my son was screaming,

" Don't tackle him, Dad!)

Brett,

Well, maybe if I can unload this last 30 - 35 pounds, my feet might get

back to a EE or EEE. But, then I'll miss that unfair paddle boat effect

when swimming. The stubborn fat has to be hanging on some where.

...Not like it's hiding or anything, as it is quite visible on the

belly and chest.

As for the tackle football, you'll just have to play with 9 year olds

your same size, otherwise, you will be susceptible to these kinds of

injuries. :)
