Guest guest
Hi all, For the last week or so, I've been taking an brisk walk in the evening, in addition to my extended cardio session. And, it seems to actually be shaking up the scale a bit. I'll have to report on that after I take some other measurements next week, but that's not the real story here. The real story... Last night my 19 year old son (remember, the one who is always trying to compete against me for pushups, situps, bench presses, curls, (but NOT squats!), joined me on my walk. And, as with every other event he joins me, we end up with some kind of competition. We started with a brisk pace, then he suggested we try and do some sprints. Now, the reason I like to cycle rather than run is because of the arthritic knee and ankle (damaged from carrying the extra 150 pounds of flubber for the last 20+ years & some stupid injuries), and when I run, the impact drives a stabbing pain right to my brain. Of course, then it sounds like I'm whimping on a challenge, right? So, we decided to start jogging at a slow pace, rather than walking fast. My knee was starting to pain, but I noticed my son getting pretty winded. We settled back down and walked for a bit. At that time, the endorphins must have started to kick in a little, because the immediate knee pain started to go away, and this time, when taunted by the young one, I decided to take the challenge. Not once, but twice, we went for about 100 yard dashes. Well, I let the " old folks " down... The first time, he beat me by at least 20 feet, and the second time he had me by about the same, but only because I had a starting lead while he finished re-tying his shoe. Unfortunately for him, though, as I think I recovered a bit faster. My breathing was back to normal as we continued our fast paced walk long before he stopped gasping. I'll just need to work off another 10 years of body fat, further strengthen up the quads, take some pain killers, and I'll be kicking his butt. I'll give him the win this time, but, will try & try again. Now, if I can only stop this knee and ankle from throbbing this morning. Youch! ...But, I'll survive! -- Remember...
