Exercise, keep your weight in the normal range, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, don't smoke, and get better parents.

Prevent hardening of the arteries. A recent educational piece I listened to mentioned that the degree of dementia more closely correlated with the degree of hardening of the arteries on autopsy then the number of neurofibrillatory tangles. So prevent confounding factors.
